In Reply to: one last Clicker/iTUnes question and I'll leave you alone, what about VNC? posted by hermanesque on December 15, 2006 at 08:33:13:
Using a VNC client with a PDA would be pretty painful, in my opinion. Not only would be VERY small text, but you would have a noticeable lag in response time. I am not sure about an all Windows solution, but remote desktop does a great job with even slower connections compared to VNC clients, but you still have to deal with small text.Clicker has its own GUI. It is designed for a small screen, and lacks a lot of the iTunes feel. But it is fast, and you can browse by Artist and search for albums, etc. You can customize it with scripts too.
Follow Ups:
iTunes on my PDA looks exactly like it looks on my desktop with complete functions. The text is a bit small but my 50 year old eyes with bifocals can still see it just fine. There is no lag in response via my wireless network. If I put the PDA next to my monitor I see them change at the same time. You can only see a portion of your desktop at a time (about 1/4) but the majority of the time I use iTunes browser and just want to see the artist and album columns anyway. It is very easy to scroll around the screen if you want with the navigator button. Tap the search window, pop up the keyboard and tap in what you wan to search for.Compared to Clicker there is no contest for me. The only thing Clicker has going for it that I can see is it is easier to see but I'm sticking with VNC unless somebody writes scripts that give you album functions like iTunes. Clicker is just too limited.
Follow the link and download the third file down for windows and a palm PalmVNC-WinVNC.exe. I tried PalmVNC-UltraVNC.exe first but that gave me a protocol error. It looks like there is a VNC program for just about all devices and operating systems.
I had to change my port to 80 but other than that it was pretty straightforward
Cool! One question, though - is there a trick to getting out of PalmVNC? There doesn't seem to be an easy way on my Palm T/X; I end up clicking the Find icon to jump to my address book to get out.
The only way I've found to kill it is to hook up the USB cable and hit the sync button. I'll have to try the find button. Fortunately for me the only thing I use it for is iTunes so its not a big deal. What irritates me is that the Palm times out and disconnects from wifi. I can't figure out to make it stay connected. Not huge since it reconnects quickly but I would rather it stayed connected.
