I bought a BES Audio DAC with usb input limited to 48/16. It doesn't sound any good compared to the same music from a Sont transport. So, I upsampled in Foobar to 88.2/32 from 441./16 with src, outputting in Direct Sound 2. The thing works and the sound at hf improves.
For the hell of it, I upsampled to 176.4k and the thing still worked with hf further improving.
What is going on? Is WinXP resampling somehow? Or do I have a magic usb dac?
Follow Ups:
This type of imprecise resampling does sound euphonic. It makes the sound rounder and smoother, and rolls off the highs a bit. It also reduces resolution and bass impact and flattens the soundstage some.
Frank,I have done the same thing with the Apogee Mini USB Dac. The oversampling does change the sound , but Windows is sending it out at 16/48K
How does usb on the minidac sound. On mine BESAudio it is just NOT GOOD. However the spdif input sounds good.
The Apogee sounds good; but there is much better. Certainly not as good as your main setup. This week I got the Wavelength Crimson USB DAC. This is something else, and compares to the best CD euipment out there. In a week or two I'll share my impressions.
I think XP is resampling it back down to 16/48. Why it sounds better, I don't know.
