Well my keyspan remote arrived:THe thing looked a bit different than the one pictured here, or on the package for that matter. The laser pointer button is pictured in the bottom middle, but on the one received, it was on the left between the keyspan logo and the big forward and backward buttons at the top. Not a huge deal for me since I will not use the laser pointer often.
It was easy to map to the remote to Foobar's Hot Keys, and I could get it to do 7 things I wanted to. I chose volume up, down, ffwd 1 sec, rewind 1 sec, mute, next, and hide.
The one downside is that the 8th button is the "ESC" button, and try as I might, it would only exit the preferences page in Foobar where the hot keys were mapped! SO this button is not going to work... this remote only does 7 things. THat 8th button would have come in handy, and I always found that I needed it. FOr instance, I wanted to engage the shuffle feature, but needed another button to turn it off, that 8th button would have allowed me to do that.
AJ, I could do pretty much all you asked for, but I couldn't figure out how to get the playlist playing once I switched between them. If there is a keyboard stroke that does this, I couldn't find it. But if you can, then you could do it with this.
THe cool thing is that this remote will nicely augment my airpanel and give me some basic control without having to wake up the airpanel...and for under $40, and no drivers to install.
BUt, if I had to do it a gain, I would probably get the one linked below because it has some more buttons. It is IR based, and could be more of a hassle, but for similiar money, it is a better bargain if it works and I can see no reason why it wouldn't.
Dwk on a post below shows a cheaper option, that if he has a good experience may be an even better choice.

Hi Dawnrazor,Thank you for passing the information along. I'll try one of these soon. Would you imagine a problem mapping the volume control to the Lynx Mixer global keys instead of just using Foobar's global keys?
Hey AJ,DOn't know. I was testing this on my general purpose PC. I can't try it know because I am moving this weekend and too many things are packed.
BUT, if the lynx mixer will let you assign certain key strokes to certain activities like Foobar will, then you should have no problem.
You may get lucky in that some keys like volume seem to do the same thing in many programs, and may not need to be assigned.
Moving huh? Ugh. I'm sure the end result will be worth it, but as far as the process goes I think I would rather get a root-canal.
I'm using the one you linked to and love it. It's controlling iTunes on a Mac and works flawlessly. Only downside is it seems to be a battery hog, lasting about two months with regular use.
C,Does that have special drivers for iTunes, or did you have to do some mapping like you would in foobar?
via the provided utility app.
Well, I ran into a slight snag. See, one of the characters that the remote sends out is a "B" which I think in powerpoint, will give a blank screen.Anyhow, when this key is global hotlinked in Foobar, any time you type a "b" in a program, it activate whatever command you selected in Foobar....so the "B" key is no longer usable.
This is not an issue at all on the big rig since it is dedicated, but on a computer that is used for other apps, then the remote really only does 6 things. WHich is probably plenty anyhow, but more is better.
I wonder if other remotes with more buttons behave the same way....
