after some reading, I decided to upgrade my PC audio system by using an external DAC. Based on my reading, I supposely connect my audio card's Digital out into the external DAC then to my amp. But when I look up different DAC model, it seems to me all of them have only two analog output from the DAC. Since I also use my PC for DVD and HD ts files viewing, I'd like to know HOW I can get DTS or DD 5.1 if I use external DAC. Is the above method only good for stereo music?
Follow Ups:
Is your goal to get two channel playback of 5.1 sources? Or to get 5.1+ channels out of your dac?
In order to support (decode and output analogue to more than 2 channels) DD/DTS sources I think you will have to move to a DD/DTS reciever.Or you can have your computer take the DD or DTS and convert it to a PCM/2-channel signal, then your DAC will take it from there. I do this, and get great results...sure no surround, but I don't want that anyways.
A couple of surround sound controllers also decode 5.1/7.1 signal into 3/4 pairs of 2-channel S/PDIF which you can them connect to standard 2-channel DACs.Cheers
