I got tired of trying to make the EMU 0404 work with HDCD files, so I removed it and tried in my other P4 system. An M-Audio 2496 card was removed to make way. This time the results were fine. Got a solid HDCD lock with Kernal Streaming & then I was able to install ASIO with no problems. Evidently Terretec or some other program(s) had left something on the computer so that Foobar thought something else was also running ASIO. I've since reinstalled the card in the 1st computer and reinstalled Windows. No problems now on this computer.EMU 0404 sounds good. I'm just sending a coax out to my Assemblage DAC. Seems to sound a little more "full-bodied". A little more detailed. A little more weight in the bass maybe. I'd rate it over the Terretec & the M-Audio. But who knows, I need to get some sleep.
Follow Ups:
I would be interested in hearing how the EMU sounded outputting analogue, vs your assemblage DAC. Maybe also bypassing your preamp too, if you have one.
Sorry, not gonna happen. Computer is on the other side of the room. Don't have a long enough (decent quality) interconnect. Bypassing the preamp is something I wouldn't do because I don't like losing digital resolution via a software volume control. The Assemblage DAC decodes HDCD, which is important to me. It is modified by parts connection BTW.
You really should give what Shanko is saying a try.Running direct IME has yeilded dramatic improvements, at least with my Lynx card.
The "digital volume control" issue is not an issue to my ears (maybe since Foobar is padded to 32bit?), and having a super short signal path really improved the sound. I would never ever consider buying a pre-amp again (unless I HAD to listen to vinyl, and even then...)
At least try it so you can be certain that you know what you know.
Ah well..By the way, are you sure the volume control on the EMU operates in the digital domain? I was assuming that it was a variable op-amp output.
No, I'm not sure about the EMU volume control. I know nothing about it. Maybe you're referring to the outboard 0404 USB 2.0 Audio/MIDI Interface ? I just have the PCI card, which I think is software controlledI would say that if you're in the market for a soundcard in this price range, the EMU 0404 is probably the best. I've got a Terretec EWX2496, a M-Audio Audiophile 2496. I tried the Chaintech AV710 (gave it to my brother, he took it out of his computer also) The EMU seems like a professional device. In my informal listening tests it seems to sound the best. The problems that I had with it were related to one specific computer.
