What is the minimum processor & memory to upsample from Redbook to 96 kHz?(Also running will be Win XP and a media player: MP3Toys, iTunes or Foobar)
Follow Ups:
I am not sure if the horsepower required either, but you can easily see what is happening on your own machine.Get the Secret Rabbit Code dll for Foobar. Open the Windows Task Manager (pressing ctrl - alt - delete will bring it up) and click on the "Performance" tab while running Foobar without the Secret Rabbit Code dsp activated. Look at your CPU usage. Put SRC in and set it to 96K - Best Sync Interpolator. Press play and see how much your CPU usage climbs.
For me, upsampling to 96K makes my CPU usage climb about 30% with an AMD Athlon 64.
with a 1.4 Ghz AMD Athlon and 576MB RAM.AS i type this i am re sampling a .WAV file from red book to 96/24 with Sound forge,Playing a .WAV audio file in media player 10,decoding a FLAC file to .WAV,have two Instant messenger programs running and Virus protection. The WAV file didn't skip once, played fine right thru but Windows was very slow in responding . It appears to give priority to the media player and other programs before Explorer which is the way i have it set .

(For me) that is good news.
An 866 hz I'm getting with 640 Mb, running nothing else, could be ok.What version of Windows is that; and how do give priority to a particular program?
I just bought a $1K Toshiba with dual Intel CPU's 5500's I believe and 1 GByte of RAM. It works superbly for upsampling. No pops.
though still preferring to do 96 kHz if "affordable"
It depends on what upsampler you are using. My 1ghz processor has no problem upsampling to 96 using the onboard upsampler in Foobar, but can't do much past 48 when using secret rabbit. One option may be to create 24/96 files, and just play them back. Takes time and much bigger drives, but if your cpu can't do it real time, then that is the only option for higher res.
