Hi all. I am looking for a small, cheap, but decent USB interface solution for the PC. Essentially all I need really is USB in, RCA out. I have read that the UA-1EX is a good product for this, but it also has the great benefit of having S/PDIF optical out. It also has 24-bit operation and up to 96kHz input/output. Another importantly thing is that I have heard that Edirol are great when it comes to drivers and ASIO 2.0 support (unlike manufacturers like M-Audio).Anyone have experience with it? Any objections or things to bear in mind if wanting to purchase it? I particularly like the 24/96 operation and the digital out, allowing me to upgrade later on to use an external DAC.
Follow Ups:
Two gripes:- it does not automatically switch sample rate. You have to manually set the rate with a small switch on the back of the unit. (I suggest reading the manual to see if you like how it operates)
- it used up a fair amount of CPU on my Epia system, especially running ASIO drivers. (this is OK if you have a moderately fast CPU)
This isn't even counting the "powered by USB" thing, which honestly doesn't bather me if it sounds good. Any case, I returned mine and bought a firewire interface. Sweetwater sound was really cool about that...
From the manual: "Power Supply: Supplied from the computer"Not good at all. As a bandaid, you may use powered usb hub and plug edirol into it.
The best would be to tweak edirol to accept external regulated 5.0V DC
I will be using it for my reference headphone system (replaced my main hi-fi system for numerous reasons)....people at Head-Fi seems to be using it with much success. I have seen 5.0V mods for other units but not for the Edirol. Do you know if it has been done and documented anywhere?
How difficult is this to do?I have a Soundblaster Audigy 2 NX, external USB-> Coax converter (at least that's what I use it for)...and it has a 5v external power supply.
I wonder if the Edirol would be an upgrade. I believe it may be assuming you can use a 5v external ps...but I could be wrong!
