I don't believe it matters. Everything is converted to AL and back to .wav. There may be a time-advantage to already having the file in AL, but it doesn't matter with Wi-Fi.
it seems that the problem with the analog out of the airport express is not the dac itself , but the jitter due to a noisy power supply and a poor clock..

I make both a S/PDIF or AES output and an I2S output version with Superclock4 and new power supply - it's called Off-Ramp Wi-Fi. It is actually better than my Off-Ramp USB converter at 44.1kHz.
