I have upgraded Itunes to the latest 7.01 version and got unpleasant surprise - ripping speed is horrible. With Itunes 6 it was possible to rip both WAV and apple lossless at any speed drive supports, now, WAV rips at 1-3x and lossless at unbelievable 0.2x-0.3x.Something is wrong with encoder.
I did some googling after the fact and found the similar complaints on other forums.
Then I tried to uninstall Itunes 7, clean up the registry and install Itunes6 again, but to no avail. Once you install version 7 you can not go back.
Hopefully, Apple will fix this soon, otherwise the last resort is to reformat drive and install windows again.
If anyone has other solution, I am anxious to learn.
In any case, make informed decision before you upgrade to 7.01

Here is a potentially better ripper, with some of the features that EAC has, and it works for OSX. I've used it to rip a few discs, and it seems to work very well. It's free, check it out.-Aaron.
The file structure is slightly different than one created by iTunes. Might not matter to you as iTunes can read and play the files, but it can't share them over a network. I'm also pretty sure the files aren't compatible with some iPods, maybe the nanos but I'm not positive about that. The other issue I've seen is it gets it's album data from freedb, and you really have to watch as you can get some pretty strange results depending on who submitted the data. CDDB used by iTunes is a much cleaner database.
I love MAX, but it doesn't handle Apple lossless files well. If you use MAX to generate AL files, they can crash iPods among other problems. One workaround for this is to use iTunes to convert them from apple lossless (encoded by MAX) to apple lossless encoded by iTunes, using the convert selection command. That gives properly encoded files which still take advantage of Max's error correction--which is the best available for my hardware.
The issue is with the file naming system, not the files themselves. The way that I have Max setup (which might not be the best, I haven't played with it for very long) is to have the artist, album, and track names found, and then the CD is ripped into it's own folder on my drive. When I add the files to itunes, the track names are preserved, but the artist and album title are lost (the track name is the name of the file). I add the files to itunes, go to recently added, and select all the files I just added. I then hit cmand-i and add the album and artist name. Not too much of a pain. There might be a way to have the artist/album names added to the information on the tracks as they're ripped, but I haven't figured that out yet.
The files themselves are compatible with whatever player plays that type of file. Won't rip into apple lossless though.
Max will rip to Apple Lossless, but the files it creates will NOT share over a network. Go to the MAX forums for a discussion of this.I haven't tried it myself but these same files are not compatible with all iPods. Again, discussed in the forums.
If I had to rip, import, and then tag I would just go ahead and shoot myself.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I think it would be more correct to say that the files made by Max won't work on a network if they are ripped into apple lossless or aac. You still have to tag them with artist and album info when they're imported into itunes, which could be considered a PITA, but that's audiophildom in general.I thought it might be worth checking out, since it's free, and it supposedly rips more accurately then other options on OSX.
You will probably need to re-populate your library unless you saved your old library files, but I went back with no problems. The 7.0 library won't work with an older version. You will lose your playlists though.Go to apple.com to the discussion forums in the support section and you will see a lot of talk about this.
Gang,I have 7.01 on my server and no problems.
I have been using 7.01 for the past few days. I have had no issues with either ripping or burning. I ripped 5 CDs, and that took about 7 minutes total. They ripped at around 25x. The CD took about 3 minutes to burn. I am using apple lossless.
.
thanks for input. I will download Itunes again and check how it works. Maybe Apple fixed the problem already. Since I have installed 7.01 i have made no other changes to my PC. I ruled out drive malfunction because other programs rip at fast speed.
