Does any know the precise difference between 32 bit fixed and 24 bit padded to 32 bit settings in Foobar Playback? They sound different, mainly in terms of spacial imaging, with the latter more precise.
The report on my Lynx AES16 is the same ie 32 bit playback. My dCS 972 shows no difference in bit activity down to 24 (does not show activity below 24 bit).
I can only summise that there is some trucation which is different. The 24 bit to 32 bit padding perhaps adds some noise akin to dithering???
Follow Ups:
The only thing I've seen on this is at Techspot (link below - towards the bottom of the page), which implies that a 32 bit architecture CPU prefers to work with 32 bits of data, which seems intuitive - presumably 8 bits of dither noise are being added to the end of each word.David
Also meant to say that I've read somewhere (can't find the link, sorry) that 24 bit padded to 32 is floating point, so it calculates more accurately than fixed point.
Thanks. Wonder what it means when it gets into the soundcard and then the dac???
