One day it dawned on me:a) I've got 200+ gigs of WMA lossless files
b) My Cary 303/200 cdp has an spdif INPUT
c) **ping**Everything I've read suggests to output lossless audio files to an outboard DAC. So I bought 50ft of rg6 cable and had a go. I don't envision ever going back to spending much time listening to individual cd's. Without the coax input my Cary would be gathering dust, instead, using it as an outboard DAC is superb.
Even if I do segue to using a Squeezebox for signal transmission, the Cary DAC may still prove to be the input of choice.

> > Any great experiences with outboard DACs?There are many very good outboard DACs. I use an Audio Aero Prima SE because it has a very good tube output stage along with the ability to switch between mutilple digital and analog inputs. It has replaced my tube preamp. The best sound I have acheived is using the computer as a transport playing back lossless flac files.
Beyond sound quality, the digital inputs were one of my ancillary reasons for choosing the Cary CDP ... and now it's turned out to be one its biggest advantages.I'm running a DIY music server in the basement to a wired SqueezeBox and then into my Cary and I couldn't be happier. Besides the wonderful sound, it is just a whole new way to interact with your music collection. In fact, the number of hours I listen has definitely gone way up.
I also use my CDP to play 24/48 and 24/96 DADs (Classic and Chesky) with the digital signal coming from a DVD player. I've also ripped the audio tracks from concert DVDs, converted to FLAC and played these back via the SqueezeBox at 24bit/48khz resolution ... great sound!
Initiative comes to those who wait.

I use an outboard Bel Canto DAC2 for the Squeezebox. I only use the cd player for disks I was too lazy to rip :) There's something about holding a disk and getting up versus a remote. I prefer the activity but to each his own.

really needs to be congratulated on his choice to include digital inputs on his CD players. Most expensive CDP's simply don't even begin to offer digital input and are OUT for us audio PC users. Now make sure you've got a "good" way to take digital out from the PC. It really runs the gamut...
Hi there,I'd appreciate any light you can shed on this. My system is listed in member systems.
Hmm, your system just lists "coax" from "PC." Are you saying you just use your PC's Motherboard's on-board spdif output (not bit-perfect) or from a separate soundcard's spdif output (which card)? If you're just using motherboard's spdif output and like it already, you will get a rather large jump in SQ if you use a good "pro" soundcard with transformer-coupled "proper" spdif output that's capable of bit-perfect digital output with ASIO.
As far as coax, I would also recommend Belden 1695A if you are using "usual" RG6 cables.
The spdif comes off the TBSC card via the RG6 into the Cary DAC. Which aspects of sound quality can I expect improvement?I've been thinking about putting off any new sound card investments until I get a new core2duo computer next summer. I figure if Vista ships in Jan there will be a bunch of new cards to coincide with the launch. Will a new card now net a BIG gain? Thanks!
