Hi, I'm moving and I want to rip my CDs to a good format and sell my collection before I move. I was going to rip to FLAC but I'm open to other suggestions. I need something that is simple as I don't have time for much of a learning curve. Also something that rips fast.I did succesfully converted one file to FLAC by using CDex Version 1.7 Beta by choosing the FLAC Encoder DLL in the Options menu. I changed the compression level to "5". (I had read that "5" provides the best balance of file/size and fidelity) When I play the FLAC file that I created in CDex in Winamp it sounds a little "tinny" compared to the file of the straight CD. Did I miss any steps? Also, I didn't do any tagging.
Follow Ups:
The numeric setting in FLAC does not affect file quality. It is still lossless. What it affects is the amount of compression. A higher compression will reduce file size but the CPU will have to work harder to uncompress the file. Normally this is not an issue, certainly not if the computer is of even remotely recent vintage and is primarily dedicated to it's work as music server.Chances are that any difference in sound you preceived were due to a difference in equipment (internal CD DAC versus the hard drive copy being routed through another processor, etc.)
CDEX should give a good rip if you are using Paranoia,Full as the setting. Are you listening to the Flac and CD files with the same media player? In general, the rip should sound superior to the CD in playback.
Hope this can help:Download Exact Audio Copy (EAC) and FLAC, both free.
Following the instruction here on how to set up EAC to work with FLAC:

That's is!!
I set mine to either 0 or 1 to get the best quality, the result flac file size difference between all the quality setting to me doesn't mean that much, but you might think differently. Cheers.
