Not directly related to your quesry, but it's a must if you havn't done it as you've gone along.Actually, a better alternative is (if you have the disc space) to copy them en-masse to another partition or drive.
Follow Ups:
I have noticed that Flac files and other formats files that store metadata seem to fragment when the metadata is added or changed. This happens when the metadata is added when the file is first created, and then again when there is any change to the metadata. Which can be more often than you'd think with many media players that do a lot of collection management.
If you have been adding stuff to a blank drive and not deleting anything in the process there is no need to defrag.
I've posted on this issue before. In ripping CD's (or for any program output for that matter), my practice (having noticed the fragnetation problem) is to extract to a temp destination on a seperate partition to the intended archive, and then copy them over.
"If you have been adding stuff to a blank drive and not deleting anything in the process there is no need to defrag."Au contraire. Files 'saved' or output from applications appear always to be fragmented from the get-go in my experience. At least according to the Windows defrag utility and Diskeeper.
