Yes, I will spring for the digital mods next (as I need the SB3 to feed my digitally amplified XR55). I am not going there now because I feel the optical link might be less exposed to power supply than the electrical.
I am fully convinced that the computer based playback provides the best fidelity. If we can take care of jitter in the intermediary device like the SB3, we are in Utopia.
Follow Ups:
I noticed on the Bolder site this morning that they no longer offer the Basic PS or the Deluxe PS. I guess that they figure that a Modded Elpac is now the entry level PS and that the Basic PS was a hard sell. In addition, at $750 the Ultimate PS is even too rich for me.I guess that the next step is to get the Elpac and take a listen and decide if you want to go for the mods.
The Basic and Deluxe PS have been discontinued for some time now.I was backordered for quite a long time building the Basic PS. There is still a demand for them.
Unfortunately, I found a major improvement in sound when I first built The Ultimate PS. It was such a great improvement that I no longer thought it worthwhile to build a power supply that didn't sound as good.
The ELPAC, when modded, sounds very good. It is fairly close to the original Basic. It is also a lot less expensive than anything I could put together. ELPAC is discontinuing that power supply. For now, all you can get is the model with the DIN connector on it. The ELPAC linear is being replaced with a switcher.
I can upgrade the Deluxe Power Supply and Basic Rev. 1 to the Ultimate. There are quite a few folks who have had this done. Please contact me for details.
