Im getting ready to put my cd's on my hard drive using eac with flac compression. I thought flac only compressed about 50%, but according to EAC it's getting compressed to about 10%...anyone?also I'm thinking of getting an ipod. Im sure ipod doesn't support flac. Will Itunes convert flac to mp3's?
thanks,

any thoughts on the best to use?
On my computer it takes about the same amount of time to compress using #8 (in the background) as it does to rip a track, so it all comes out about even. Why not use it if it doesn't really take any longer?
From the info I've come across, it doesn't matter. I think it takes a little longer to compress, but the end result is still a bit-for-bit copy of the original. I'm a noob tho, spent the last two days loading cd's and trying to configure foobar....It better be worth it in the end...
Ok I figured some stuff out on my own(I think)1st off. The cd's are in fact being compressed in .flac. I was looking at the EAC window where the songs are located while ripping. In the column it has 'size' as in how many Megs each song is on the cd. Next to this column is another column that says comp.size. Under this column EAC was showing sizes of 2-5MBs. I don't know why. By checking the properties of a compressed song I found out it is in fact only about 30-50% of the original size. I'm so smart!
So now I have questions regarding ripping and foobar. Right now I just have my songs going to a folder I aptly named 'ripped music'. Since this is just a folder the songs are just splattered all over with just the name of the song showing. Is there a better way/place to rip them to?
Is it also possible to create a sort of library and different types of playlists in foobar and have the songs STAY there without being deleted? I created a playlist called 'library' and loaded all my songs from my 'ripped music' folder. Problem is tho if I click on a song outsite of foobar it will play the song I click on and magically erase every single song I loaded into foobar. Very annoying.
Sorry for some of the double posting of questions, just been a long day dealing with this.
If any of you haven't figured it out yet, I'm sort of a noob :)
Like you, I have a "Ripped Flacs" folder that all of my .flacs go into. But I go one step further and add a new folder for each CD that I rip. The naming scheme is: Artist (Last, First) - Albumfor example:
Rollins, Sonny - East Broadway Run DownThis works for me for whole albums. Although iTunes and others alphabetize with the first name, the librarian in me likes having last-name first.
There is an easy fix for your problem of playlists being erased when you click on a song outside Foobar. Go to your Foobar Preferences--> General--> Commandline--> click on the tab next to the option that reads Always send to playlist and name the playlist something like "outside".

having some issues still...As I mentioned for some reason my audio files are being compressed to about 10% of original, not 30 - 50% as .flac is supposed to do. A 600mb cd is getting compressed to around 60mb. I don't get it.
Other issues..
I don't even have media monkey on my pc. I did at one time, but not anymore.foobar also keeps kicking out the songs I put in it. It's not a big deal as I just go to the folder where they are located and just put them back in foobar but it is annoying.
FWIW I have my drives set-up like this....C: contains eac program and I have a dedicated drive(E) that has foobar on it and also the location for the ripped music. Is there a better way or does it not matter??
10% sounds like something is wrong. I've used EAC to rip CDs to FLAC and my average is about 50% (720kbps avg for 9243 items). It might be worth double checking the external compression settings on your EAC.I'm not sure if this applies to Foobar, but it is standard to install applications to the C: drive.
I'm using EAC to rip .flac files to a dedicated hard drive. At the bottom of the EAC window(where all songs are located)it has what I assume is the total amount of MB's on the actual cd, and right next to that it has what I assume is the compressed size of the files will be. It looks something like this--752.38/69.88If this is the case this means my cd's are being compressed to less than 10% of their original size. This seems like it is being ripped in an mp3(lossy) format and not flac.
Help?
That is, a 50mb file will compress to 30mb - on average.
The directory where I'm having EAC put the ripped music is showing them as media monkey files. What gives?But...if I look in 'properties' of a song while in foobar it says it is a .flac file.
confused.....
Media Monkey associated all FLAC files with itself. You can go into Medie Monkey and un-associate it, or you can right mouse click, open with, select always open with, and select whatever you want to associate it with - Winamp, whatever.
