In Reply to: Reduced bias setting for fewer tubes in atma M60? posted by Zenjabil on April 3, 2005 at 12:19:13:
You are absolutely correct in your thinking.(Tubes / 8) * 550 = new bias setting (for M-60)
As an example, 4 tubes total would require a bias of 275mA
Follow Ups:
I thought that the recommended bias setting for the 6AS7s was .075 per tube, e.g. 4 tubes = 0.3ma?
- I thought that the recommended bias setting for the 6AS7s was .075 per tube, e.g. 4 tubes = 0.3ma?(Taking this to mean 0.3A or 300mA)
This is still reasonable, but on the high side. Our bias specs are somewhat conservative - a balance between long service and best sound.
I find that (in my own system) there isn't any major improvement going from 550 to 600mA, and at times I had the sense that the higher bias settings were making the amps a sound a little taught; high-strung you might say.
In any event, I would never take an M-60 over 600mA, period. Failures become more likely.
I know that Atma-sphere recommends 550 ma for 8 tubes; perhaps there is a difference in recommended settings between 6AS7Gs and 6AS7s?
