The question may sound silly to someone but it's serious to me: can I safely remove the tubes of the phono section in my MP-3? I see no reason to keep them running while I am not (and will be not) using a turntable.Ah, I see another question jumping back to me, and this is the answer: I purchased my MP3 used, hence I had no choice...
Thanks for your advice.

It's not a silly question, and to answer it, this is a Very Bad Idea. The DC filament supply in the MP-3 uses simple resistive filtering, and has no other regulation. With all tubes absent from the phono stage, the tubes in the linestage will see more than 7.2V on their heaters.
The 6.3V rating is generally considered a 'do not exceed' but in practice, ~6.5V is OK. 7.3 will certainly damage the tubes, possibly in short order.
Bill, your answer is clear and competent, thank you.
I could not know that the tubes of both sections where connected in that way.
As for using the phono input with a turntable, I unfortunately sold my Thorens and my record collection back in 1988...
Ask Ralph Karsten. It may not be a good idea to remove the tubes entirely, because that dramatically changes the load on the power supplies. OTOH, it may be no problem. Why not just stick some cheap but quiet tubes in there and not worry about it? By the way, the best solution is to buy yourself a cheap turntable and cartridge and find out what you are missing.
