A Siegfried 811-10 with 0,1uF Jensen oilcaps on the inputs drives Supravox 215-2000 EXC in Oris 150's. A Micro ZOTL with 0,0015uF Jensens drives JBL 2435 NeoBe compression drivers in approx. 500Hz horns of unknown make. As luck would have it I can use both amps without any attenuation, so a Silver Rock alone controls volume. Well, on very agressive recordings I back off the Micro a little. All in all I feel this has a pretty natural sound.
Follow Ups:
I have a Siegfried 811-10 and love the sound. What is the purpose of the input caps? Have you bypassed the built-in attenuator? Very interesting setup.
Good to hear from a fellow Siegfried user. The caps are high pass first order passive line level crossovers. In my set up I roll off the Oris horn from around 350Hz and the JBL compression driver from 2kHz. I have never tried bypassing the volume control. I would guess that the improvements would be slight, and I have found them very useful in many implementations. I have tried some different 6SN7's with noticable results. No other tweaks. Have you? Any experiences with mains conditioners? My 230/115 transformer does not work at all with Siegfried. Micro has no problems however. What speakers do you use?Mats
Mats, nice setup. I'll bet it sounds great. I find the Siegfried to sound very open, transparent, bordering on analytical(for a tube amp). I have been trying to add a touch of warmth. Tweaks that I feel have been successful are several. The most change, tho not dramatic, was changing the stock 6SN7 tubes for early RCA's. I changed the Power Cord to Harmonix also heolped to a lesser degree. I also replaced the stock feet with wood blocks which added some slight upper bass body. Herbie's Tube Dampers are inexpensive and remove a bit of sibilance. Since the amp puts out alot of RF/EMI I will be experimenting with ways to reduce this and see what benefits accrue. Each one of these tweaks are very subtle by themselves but together they make a noticable difference. BTW, I use Avantgarde Duos and love the combo. Mains conditioners are the next big issue to tackle for me.
you didn't get any feedback on your post. But don't be discouraged and do continue to let us know about your ZOTL experiences. I guess none of us has a comparable system, but yours sounds like it sounds great.
