In view of Ralph's view that the quality of the interconnect between the preamp and amp is of minor relevance (provided they are balanced) and that cheap cable suffices (owner's manual of MA 2.2 and MP-1.), I wonder if owners of this combination have experience of this question. I have PAD Dominus 4.5 meters of it and can certainly use what it will bring me, considering its price, particularly if it is redundant. I have not compared the sound to cheaper cable and bought the Dominus because the speaker cables blew away all competition. It's difficult to find 5 meters of cable just to try, but, unless I hear strong disagreement from owners, will certainly try a run of much cheaper cable. Appreciate any input of owners' experience.

So, after a month, the verdict: No difference between very, very expensive cable and Mogami Neglex. Ralph right again! Whereas the speaker cables between AS and Kharma 3.2s made a huge difference - the expensive s/cs clearly better. Amazing!!
...and found a worthwhile performance gain by switching over to Xtreme Cables brand interconnects. Fortunately I have a short run as I don't think I'd pay the price for a really long run. Brian at Xtreme is a fellow Atma-Sphere enthusiast and produces some truly exceptional products not limited to cabling. His QuickSilver GOLD contact paste is a must have accessory IME.
I looked at the Xtreme website - if I read correctly, 5 meters will cost $1300-$2700 - I may as well stick with PAD Dominus - my question is whether really cheap ($0.59 per foot) cable will do the job as well. I guess, Wellfed, your answer is "no".........
...but the difference wasn't really too major in my experience. Like I said, it was worthwhile for me, but I don't think I'd fork over the cash for a long run. A 1.5 meter run is all that I need in my current configuration.Be sure to let us know how things work out with the cheaper cable in your system.
I would not say that the interconnect makes NO difference in your set-up. I too needed a very long length (22 feet) and so chose Goertz balanced Triode Quartz partly on the basis of cost-effectiveness. It has always bothered me that I have not tried any alternatives, but I am very pleased with what I have. If I understand you correctly, you already own a pair of "high end" cables, so why not spend a little dough for a very cheap pair and compare them to the Purist cables? Then report to us whether you hear any important differences. Maybe you can arrange to borrow some "low end" cables for this purpose, though I agree it is not easy to find a pair of 5-meter cables to borrow.
I have done just that. Ordered a pair of 20 ft Mogami Neglex XLRs at 0.59$ per foot (that's right!!!!) on the advice of an AS owner that e-mailed me privately. Will post my findings. Thanks, Denis
Just curious, did you order the Mogami 2534 or 3173 wire? At $0.59, I'd assume the former. While the latter is designed as a digital AES/EBU cable, it's occasionally suggested as an analog cable.
The 2534 is a good baseline for reference, being relatively cheap, available and very consistent. And of course, it performs..
We can be thankful that Mogami sells high volumes into the pro-audio market, else I suspect *we'd* be paying much more than their dime-and-dollar prices.
I also use neglex (MP-3 - MA-1)and would be very interested in hearing your opinion of them.
So the Neglex, 2534, XLR, 20 ft arrived and is hooked up. How much break-in time does it need? I will post impressions.
Do you have to have the cable or amp end "loaded down" to 600 ohms to take advantage of this? I'm currently using 5 meters of generic silver cable between my MP3 and S30 with resitors at the amp end of the cable so that the preamp "sees" 600 ohms. Is this the way it should be done?
600 Ohms is to low for a MP3. Numerous people have reported better dynamics with 1200-1500 for a MP3. 600 was suggested for the MP1.
Legendre, I ordered both. Franks, that's a good question. I was going to use the low impedance switch, as I do with the Dominus. I dont see that Ralph recommends changing the impedance switch for different cables with the MP-1/MA 2.2 set-up.
Try it- which ever way works better is the one to use :)
