Will the M60mkII.3 with power supply boost and teflon caps perform well with Avalon Avatar speakers (6 ohm nominal 5.5 ohm minimum / 85dB) WITHOUT zero transformers?
What would be the downside?
Is an old MA1 a better solution?
Thanks.

Hello,I have been using a pair of m60's with my Dynaudio 1.3se's, which have about the same specs as your Avatar's. I have been happy with the sound, but given the responses to your post, perhaps I am missing something?
Any comments gentlemen were be appreciated.
I am (now) running my Revel Studios with my M-60 Refs.
biamped (crossing [bass] at 50 hz) coming from Revel Sub30 . . .I am really H A P P Y with the marraige
(while [perhaps] less than ideal 6 ohm load)
it has very good drive and a gorgeous body.Cannot wait to try (this combo) with a pair of ZEROS
between the amp and bass drivers (alone)
and run the Mid/Tweeter direct.Amazing AMPS that render many *other* lofty designs
(idle) into the corner . . . or (unused in) the closet.
While the power supply boost and teflon caps will certainly help, I agree that without the ZERO autoformers the performance might be marginal, but it's worth a try. If considering MA-1s I would recommend Mk II.2 or later if possible; Mk II.3s built this year are easier on the output tubes and have some other advantages. Perhaps Ralph Karsten or Bill Layer will chime in here to comment on how they might match up with your speakers as compared with current M-60s.
Thanks, but what do you mean by "marginal"? Does it mean that you can't play very loud, or that that amplifier sounds bad, e.g. no dynamics or bass?I prefer not to use the Zero's. A few years ago I've tried them with a Graaf GM20 OTL and in my opinion the sound lost some of it's OTL magic.
I defer to Ralph's comments. Try them with and without the ZEROs if you can.
Generally Avalon speakers have worked extremely well with our amps. In this case I would try it with and without the ZERO and see which you like better.
Try to find an impedance curve for the speaker in question. Not all "6-ohm" speakers are alike in their drive-ability. For example, if the impedance at mid- and/or low frequencies is at or above 6 ohms and not lower than 6 ohms except in the treble, i.e., @ > 2KHz, you may be OK. But the overall rating of 85 db efficiency suggests that the match would be marginal without Zeros.
