both my vintage mint LP and SACD versions. Is that video a clip off of the DVD with Chicago? I have to look at home. On that DVD, Szell is really stiff looking. Was looking at some youtube on Sarah Chang. Beautiful and wonderful young virtuoso!
Follow Ups:
The one who submitted the video stated "Chicago Symphony", and I didn't recognize any of the string or wind players, predominant in the clip. (I would have recognized Daniel Majeske, Lynn Harrell, Maurice Sharp, Robert Marcellus, Lifschey or John Mack, etc. .... The only Chicago Symphony musician I'd recognize is Bud Herseth, but there were no predominant trumpet parts in this particular clip. I also presumed the oboist was Ray Still, but I was unable to confirm it was actually him. I've never heard Still produce such exquisite tone.) There was also a comment speculating that Szell may have liked the Chicago Symphony better than his own, but it's purely conjecture.
in the Beethoven and Mozart Turkish. Perhaps not through the whole concert, but his mannerisms and stiff conducting somewhat detract. This Khovanshchina seems to be part of the video. I will have to review it again. The sound is quite limited.By contrast, on the Bell Telephone Hr tape, he is definitely not stiff, but alive and vigorous. The stuff on the Great Conductors of the Century Vol 1 is also great and he's alive as well.
That is definitely the Chicago Symphony, probably from the mid 1960s, with a young Donald Peck as principal flutist. Peck was appointed by Reiner in 1959. And yes, that does look like a very young and boyish looking Ray Still playing oboe (but I can't swear to it). Peck and Still both played in the Chicago Symphony (brilliantly) for well over 30 years.
