Admittedly, I'm not the most well versed in the jazz world, but I wouldn't consider myself illiterate either. Regardless, I never heard of Phineas Newborn until I saw a used copy of "Harlem Blues" on CD. Great melodic piano playing, emotive and can make those ivory keys swing as well. With Ray Brown and Elvin Jones backing him up, this has turned out to be a great find (good recording quality to boot). I can't believe I never heard of this guy before! Anyone else make some recommendations of what other Newborn recordings I should explore?
Follow Ups:
"A World Of Piano" w/Paul Chambers, Philly Joe, Sam Jones, Louis Hayes on OJC."The Newborn Touch" w/Leroy Vinnegar, Frank Butler on Contemporary
"Please Send Me Someone To Love" w/Elvin Jones, Ray Brown
Can't imagine a Phineas Newborn recording that wouldn't be well worth having. You should also check another killer pianist if you aren't familiar with him -- Hampton Hawes. Everything I've heard of his is also great.
I agree Phineas was a great talent.
Here are a few more titles:Great jazz piano of Phineas Newborn Jr.
Here is Phineas (get the Japanese edition. Koch ed. is not very good)
We three--a Roy Hayns date (trio) but Phineas is featured.Good listening.

Phineas was the finest!! Ray Brown said something to that effect,
anyway. Also agree with GEO's recommend of Hampton Hawes. His All Night
sessions - there are three, maybe 4 of them - are just awesome.
Personally I prefer the records he made prior to jail. YMMV
of course.
Really great pianists.
Hampton Hawes' "Live at Montmartre" disc. It's not only my favorite Hawes record, it's one of my favorite jazz discs of all time. It got horrible reviews but I think it's incredible. I seem to be alone on this one. It's the one from 1971 with Michael Carvin and Henry Franklin. Yeah, I know it has that old Herb Albert chestnut "This Guy's in Love with you" but it also has a killer version of Shorter's "Footprints" that still gives me chills.
"The Green Leaves Of Summer" w/Monk Montgomery, Steve Ellington on OJC"Hampton Hawes Vol.1: The Trio" w/Red Mirchell, Chuck Thompson on Contemporary
"For Real" w/Harold Land, Scott LaFaro, Frank Butler on Contemporary ?
I have "The Trio" on vinyl as well. Great sound!
I am not sure if I have that. I really like the Seance.
> I am not sure if I have that. <Not sure? LOL! I've said the same thing from time to time. Hell, I've even re-purchased things I already owned a couple of times. The best story I have on that is when a fellow collector came by and heard about 5 minutes of a certain Freddie Hubbard record I was playing. He asked what it was and when I told him, he said "Oh yeah -I have that one. Great record!". :) Too much great music out there and, alas, so little time to consume it all.
I have quite a few Hampton Hawes dates. He was a very clean and musical player with nice touch and taste. 'Everybody Likes Hampton Hawes' is also nice. I don't get back to my old records like I used to....so much new music and not enough time to absorb all of it!
