tonight I have finally begun to hear what he is all about. A bit mad, but fascinating. In the rondo of the Concerto Grosso No.1 when he breaks into the tango is a chilling dance across the high wire. Woderful sounds here.
Follow Ups:
fun to 'discover' a new composer. This is interesting music. 20th century atonality on the verge of tonality.
I enjoy "Collected Songs Where Every Verse Is Filled With Grief". It is performed by the Kronos Quartet on the Nonesuch label. It is their arrangement from a piece called Concerto for Mixed Choir.
I also enjoy his Gogol Suite.
I'm a fan of the Quasi Una Sonata and, for me, this recording/performance
Don't piss on my shoe and tell me it's raining.
Yes, I have it. It is wonderful! I vacilate between the Bridge and the Bis recordings. Get both!By the way, to those unfamiliar with this piece, "Quasi Una Sonata" is the subtitle for "Sonata No.2 for Piano and Violin".
Unless I'm looking up the wrong disc it looks like the Bis recording is the same piece but re-orchestrated (by Scnittke) for violin and chamber orchestra, instead of violin and piano. I'll definitely check it out.
The Bis recording I'm refering to is not re-orchestrated. It is piano and violin only. It is Bis CD-527. The re-orchestrated version is CD-1437.
Thanks!

Check out Schnittke's "Sonata No.2 for Piano and Violin". It's my favorite! There are many recordings. My favorite is on the BIS label.
