This is my absolute favorite for PC1. It is only on LP (Vox), but good news these LPs are easy to find. Guiomar Novaes is pretty sloppy with Chopin solo pieces on other Vox records, but on this one she worked with a great conductor, and the result is terrific. IMO, Jonel Perlea is the most underrated conductor of all times.
I love Zimerman in every other Chopin piece, but not the piano concerti, and especially not his second recordings on DG. The reason is his strange "fussiness" with dynamics and tempi in the gorgeous poetic moments, especially in the 1st mov't of the first, and the 2nd mov't of the 2nd. My favorite for the first is Perahia on Sony/CBS Masterworks, and my fav for the second is Davidovitch on Philips. Delicate, perfectly-poised playing.
I grew up with Arrau's 3LP set of Chopin's orchestral music on Phlips and I'm very fond of them because of Arrau's playing as well as the music other than the PC's. I'm not as fond of Philips CD's sound, but the music is still excellent and the CD's are cheap. Best, I don't know. I have others but these are the ones I listen to most.
I'm not sure that they are the best, but they're high on my list.
