Solti, Previn, Slatkin, Mehta, Maazel, Mackerras and Stokowski have all conducted the brits to great success.
Follow Ups:
As the discussion was Nationals and their music I used that quintessential English composer Elgar as an example,he was not a cowpat composer but his music is all about the end of a way of life, loss of an Empire, and The Great War.Its all in the Cello Concerto.
Its just my opinion that Boult understands the above and Solti does not.
Some Composers are Universal(1st division)some not(2nd division).
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.Most conductors have homes in multiple countries. Many take up residence in the UK since it's a good jumping point to Europe and the United States. By your logic, since Christoph von Dohnányi split his time in America for 20 years, he must be an expert in American music. After 15 years in LA, Salonen must be a brilliant conductor of Gershwin.
No, but I am not saying the Conductors you listed are brilliant interpreters of English music,in fact far from it.
