But its true.
Glad you mentioned Brits.
Name one good performance of a work of Elgar by an non British Artist, and do not dare say Bernstein conducting Enigma Variations on DG.
Follow Ups:
Solti, Previn, Slatkin, Mehta, Maazel, Mackerras and Stokowski have all conducted the brits to great success.
As the discussion was Nationals and their music I used that quintessential English composer Elgar as an example,he was not a cowpat composer but his music is all about the end of a way of life, loss of an Empire, and The Great War.Its all in the Cello Concerto.
Its just my opinion that Boult understands the above and Solti does not.
Some Composers are Universal(1st division)some not(2nd division).
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.Most conductors have homes in multiple countries. Many take up residence in the UK since it's a good jumping point to Europe and the United States. By your logic, since Christoph von Dohnányi split his time in America for 20 years, he must be an expert in American music. After 15 years in LA, Salonen must be a brilliant conductor of Gershwin.
No, but I am not saying the Conductors you listed are brilliant interpreters of English music,in fact far from it.
garrod:It is unfortunate but most British composers such as Elgar, VW, Britten etc. are heard rarely if at all outside of Great Britian. Outside of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance and maybe the Enigma Variations, not much is played on this side of the Pond. Of course there are American conductors such as Previn and Slatkin -- on occation--who have given very good performances of British composers, but in most cases with British orchestras!
and Kyung Wha Chung a fabulous Elgar violinist. Heinrich Schiff and Truls Mork are great Shostakovich players in the Cello Concertos."But it's true" is too general. "Often the case" gets the point across without absolutes.
Chung also did a pretty good job with the Walton. But she did live in the UK and married to an Englishman so could be called adopted.
The Solti Elgar Symphony no1 got a rosette in the Penguin but compared to Boult or Barbirolli there is something missing.
It is true the exception proves the rule, and there is one recording of Elgar by a foreigner that is superior then any version by an Englishman-In the South,Bournmouth SO Conducted by Silvestri
