There's a number of offerings out there. Which has the most impressive overall recording/performance?
Thanks folks.
Follow Ups:
It has to be a Russian they understand the music.
Rostropvich great artist but the performance with Ormandy is completely spoilt by the recording,I do not mind Slava on my lap but New York Phil as well?No thanks.
My benchmark for Concerto no1 for Cello, is Mikhail Khomitser with the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra Conducted by Rozhdestvansky.
I have this on vinyl Melodia 33cm 01883 and on EMI ASD 2585.
It would be surprising if this great recording has never been released on CD.
> > I do not mind Slava on my lap but New York Phil as well?No thanks. < <I think you mean Philidelphia orch. not New York. I really like this recording. I don't mind the multi miked recording, it is such a vivid performance by both Slava and Phili.
My Mistake.
Yes it is a vivid recording, but on LP the balance is terrible.
It has to be a Russian they understand the music.Oh please...
I'm so sick of these nationalistic idioms. Only Czechs can conduct Czechs, only Brits can conduct Brits, blah, blah, blah.
But its true.
Glad you mentioned Brits.
Name one good performance of a work of Elgar by an non British Artist, and do not dare say Bernstein conducting Enigma Variations on DG.
Solti, Previn, Slatkin, Mehta, Maazel, Mackerras and Stokowski have all conducted the brits to great success.
As the discussion was Nationals and their music I used that quintessential English composer Elgar as an example,he was not a cowpat composer but his music is all about the end of a way of life, loss of an Empire, and The Great War.Its all in the Cello Concerto.
Its just my opinion that Boult understands the above and Solti does not.
Some Composers are Universal(1st division)some not(2nd division).
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.
It is interesting that five of the seven Conductors you list lived in the UK.Most conductors have homes in multiple countries. Many take up residence in the UK since it's a good jumping point to Europe and the United States. By your logic, since Christoph von Dohnányi split his time in America for 20 years, he must be an expert in American music. After 15 years in LA, Salonen must be a brilliant conductor of Gershwin.
No, but I am not saying the Conductors you listed are brilliant interpreters of English music,in fact far from it.
garrod:It is unfortunate but most British composers such as Elgar, VW, Britten etc. are heard rarely if at all outside of Great Britian. Outside of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance and maybe the Enigma Variations, not much is played on this side of the Pond. Of course there are American conductors such as Previn and Slatkin -- on occation--who have given very good performances of British composers, but in most cases with British orchestras!
and Kyung Wha Chung a fabulous Elgar violinist. Heinrich Schiff and Truls Mork are great Shostakovich players in the Cello Concertos."But it's true" is too general. "Often the case" gets the point across without absolutes.
Chung also did a pretty good job with the Walton. But she did live in the UK and married to an Englishman so could be called adopted.
The Solti Elgar Symphony no1 got a rosette in the Penguin but compared to Boult or Barbirolli there is something missing.
It is true the exception proves the rule, and there is one recording of Elgar by a foreigner that is superior then any version by an Englishman-In the South,Bournmouth SO Conducted by Silvestri
I don't recommend him very often, But for some reason the old Ormandy recording really works.I like the Rosti, but, for me, it is not a be-all end-all recording.

what an event.
Been thinking of picking that one up as an 'alternate.'
You're talking the Schiff w/Maxim Shostakovich conducting? Outstanding. It's recently be remastered in the Originals series.
I own it but haven't listened to it since I bought it a few years back. I'll check it out tonight.

Schiff is certainly an alternative - his bowing is quite different than Rostropovich. Schiff's sound is more bright and focused, resulting in a clear separation between him and the orchestra. From my one time listen I enjoyed the performance. It was never over the top or micromanaged. I particularly liked the slow movement.
