Kavakidd has returned with some more fine tunes. These are in a more modern vein. They are ready now for your valued consideration. Let's get ready to rumble and good luck.
Follow Ups:
also worse. At least this round I was familiar with the sidemen's names and much of their work. That last round (#2) left me in jazz aficionado existential crisis. Peanuts Huck? Buzzy Drootin? With all due respect to these men, I've never seen the names in print, much less could identify their playing.
Although, maybe Peanuts Huck is also appropriate. Anyway, the latter spelling is a typo. Buzzy Drootin had me rattling my brain "WHO?". I know the existential angst you feel. It never stops really. It's very difficult to keep strong tabs on new releases in the genre, let alone the entire history of this music. Don't get too bummed out about it. Just keep listening and reaching.

#1. Not sure who this is, but I don't care for this one. The tenor player falls back on a few licks over and over, and the pianist sounds like a decent intermediate player. Don't like the drummer's ride-cymbal sound or wimpy touch so much either. Curious to know who this is and if it was just not their day.#2. This sounds like on of DG's groups from the late 50s or early 60s. DG on tpt, maybe LW on alto.
#3. BK on guitar? West coasters for sure, maybe CB or RF on trumpet.
#4. Nice hard bop date, kind of sounds like CB on tpt. Maybe SC on piano? Maybe PA on bari. Not sure, but all nice.
#5. Isn't this BG's original recording of this song from the album MTJ? Sounds like a young MT on piano. I believe this was his first appearance on record. BG may be somewhat underappreciated as a player, but I think his legacy as a writer is well-known and deeply respected.
Hope I'm close!
none of the above
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
That SOB kava stumped me again. Really don't know who these guys are, but I think some of your answers are wrong.#2 Sounds like a tenor player playing alto to me, not Leo. Maybe early ON. RW on tpt?
#4 I thought for a sec. it might be DB & PA, but that can't be Pepper. Sounds more like CD.
#5 If you mean Golson, it sure doesn't sound like him to me. Not liquid enough. I'll be surprised if you're right.
Sure did sound like a tenor player playing alto which is why I thought of Oliver Nelson also. Funny that nobody seemed to hear it that way. It was eerie at times.
On #2, ON is correctOn #4 CD is correct
Did better that you thought
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
In fact, after reading some of the stuff posted below, I know you're right on at lease some counts. I should have done better on this round. Oh, the shame of it all....

No shame!! I really don't like that tenor player on #1 either. I've been thinking of all the cats I'm not fond of. I was wrong with Johnny Griffin but he was the one I thought would be playing all those useless notes. The unfortunate fact is if your not fond of some cats you don't listen to them and that makes it hard. Or is that Ciala??
Oh well, win some, lose some. I'm just embarrassed because I didn't remember that RM record with FH and, uh, the other guy from your site a few months back. I had a senior moment during the last round with that Hackett/Teagarden thing. I bought that record little over a year ago, but haven't spent quite the time with it that it probably merits. Is this a hazard of owning a lot of records, or am I starting to get old? Is this how it starts, Barry? Hold me, I'm scared.

You can handle it. Stand tall and proud and repeat your name over and over again so you don't forget who you are.Do you know that most of these things Kava put on were almost in my sweet spot by year. #5 I saw in the 50's and beyond, I heard Joe a million times and have a fair amount of his records, I have the RM thing and it just dawned on me that I forgot all about #3. I'll have to listen to that again. Sounds like a West Coast trumpet player but I didn't hear enough yet.

P.S. Hang on. You'll survive but you will never be as happy.
Stop it guys. I'm about 10 months away from officially entering dotage myself and I'm trying to block out all pessimistic thoughts :)I really like Kramer's response to a heckling ball-boy:
Boy: Hey pops, isn't there a better way to spend your twilight years.
Kramer: I may be old, but I'm spry.
I would like to welcome you officialy into dotage when it arrives. I can tell you that a lot of your innards stop working properly IMMEDIATELY. You must quit working and only do what you want to do at the time because time becomes more important but at the same time less important. Forget about your neighbors because they are useless slugs. That's just a few little things to start thinking about. When the time comes I will be there to console you.
getting close myself, at 59. I'm working on developing an appropriate degree of apathy regarding the things I can't remember, things that take me twice as long to do, things I just consider too much of pita to do. Am I on the right track?
You certainly are but remember to not go too gently into the night. Develop an attitude of "the wise old guy" so you will be respected and loved for your ineptitude. Be patient with yourself but show some impatience for others. Eccentricity, even feigned is lovable to the younger set. Heed my advice and you will probably get smacked by someone.

Quick listen before I have to cook. Trumpet could be almost anybody from out there like maybe JS or even SR. Guitar player might be a transplant????
but a lot of fun listening to these tunes.#1 Great group, wonderful sax. Not even know who can be, but I like it!!!!
#2 That piano.... The trumpet sounds a bit like HSE, but is not him. Good tune
#3 Fantastic tune, really liked it. Could the guitar be TF?
#4 Swinging tune, funny, coherent... that's jazz played by people who know standing together. WK on piano? That open and shinning trumpet reminds me of CT, but surely is not him....
#5 I agree with Chapra, the starting of the phrases reminds a bit of SR, but it's not SR. Knowing Barry's hit, I must recognize I not even knew there was a JRM. Good player, soulful tune.
Guys, thank you very much for the fun and the wonderful music!!!!!
I'll start with #5: JRM, TF(p),and if my memory is straight JG and PL. The tenor cat is a player I used to hear in a transvestite joint in the Village in the '50,s. I may be wrong because I don't have the recording (I'm sure somebody I knew had it) but used to dig the cat Also saw him do duets with Jim Hall----that is if it's who I think it is. Well it's worth a shot.
100% Correct-I'm assuming the rest of your comments also refer to JRM. Toldya these would be easier!
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
They do refer to him but that doesn't mean it's easy. I'm probably one of the few around here that heard him live many times. It sounded so damn familiar but I had trouble with recall. It was driving me nuts. That was an era I lived through and I still had trouble. Actually I was pretty lucky!
Yeah #5 was driving me nuts too -- it seemed so familiar. But I was about to guess Sonny Rollins because of the squawks.
I don't know if that is the right term... I was referring to the sort of abrasive tone he uses on the first note on many phrases in the lower register.
#1: Where's the trumpet ?
#2: JN on trumpet ?
#4: RM on piano with FH and CD.
The first 6 notes, the overall sound, and then the rediculous amount of notes he played leads me to think of JG on tenor who is FAST! The first 6 note pattern ba-dee-la-dee-da-da was the type of thing he did in those tenor battles.....all the time.
Not JG
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
been easy if I had used a cut he appeared on.
correct on JN (#2)but the clue referred to the tenor
#4 ON THE MONEY
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
#2: TF on piano ? Don't recognize the tenor but is it a Basie alumnus ?
nope
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
ON, HJ and I forgot but JN was doing a lot with tenors in those days. JN is a natural player. He's another very nice cat that I used to hear many times in a club I worked in around the late 70's. I just threw his business card away. Couldn't do it right after he died. Brought back good memories.
is correct!
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
chapra remembered #4. I used that same record quite a while back. Good musical memory.
Yup. You have in fact used two cuts from this album before.
and, I think, somewhat unfamiliar to many
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
the rhythm section on #3 sounds like WK, PC and JC???Thanks again Barry, Kavakidd and everyone else for the fun and humiliation!
'fraid not. Ain't it fun?
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
my download manager placed the tunes in the wrong order, so what I said about #3 should have been applied to #1. I'm re-thinking the pianist but it still sounds like PC on bass and JC on drums. It is probably other guys just playing in the same bag.#1 sounds like AF on trumpet w/ JH on guitar. It's been a long time since hearing those records, but that's my guess.
the guitar is on cut #3. No trumpet on cut #1. I think you have them in the correct order but you can verify by playing them directly from the site
"Man is the only animal that blushes - or needs to" Mark Twain
maybe it's the lack of coffee, but yes the guitar and trumpet are on #3 and to me the trumpet sounds like AF. Just guessing the guitar is JH.The piano on #4 is very familiar, but I'm drawing a blank on the name.
Glad we got that straight. However - Trumpet is not AF and the Guitar is not JH. Good tries though.
