If you're referring to No.11, "Nun seid ihr wohl gerochen", the final number of Cantata No. 6 (and of the whole oratorio), yes indeed, underneath the trumpet solo (which is just about the hardest trumpet solo in all the literature), the chorus sings a version of "Von Himmel hoch."But this chorale can be heard in several other numbers throughout the work, beginning with No.8, "Schaut hin, dort liegt im finstern Stall"--it was the Bach household's favorite Christmas tune, and Bach delighted in setting it in various ways throughout his career.
One of my favorites in this category are the Canonic Variations for organ on Von Himmel hoch, BWV 769.

Just in the interests of precision we are referring to the Christmas carol "Vom Himmel hoch" with BMV769 perhaps the best known setting by Bach."Von" = of, from
"Vom" = von dem = of or from the
Of course, you're right--sloppy typing on my part.
..is pretty tough on the trumpet as well... when I got the Oratorio I didn't quite know what to expect, but I was familiar with other bach large stuff, and from that stuff I gathered he was rather fond of the trumpet.. or rather, 3 of 'em. When I heared the trumpet work on the Oratorio, I was floored. Thanks for the confirmation. I was pretty sure it was Von Himmel Hoch... just not 100% sure.
Jesu, bleibet mein Freude also has almost the same tune.. hm. Kinda like Where's Waldo, only musically. =oD
i got the Canonic Variations on Von Himmel... in an Archiv box set, played by Walcha. good stuff.
No hints on that ditty at the beginning of the documentary? It facinates me.. I surmise it is from a Passion due to its darkness and plodding, haunting rythm.. like something for someone who has died.
Since I don't have the DVd you mention, I'd need a bit more info to identify the mystery tune.
