Assuming your refering to Steve Davis, trust me on this one. They had him listed on the records to die for, for several years. But I knew him before they even listed him. He's that good. Not very flashy, and somewhat laid back. But his style is perfection. listen to him play with Lynn Arriale sometime. I might add here that there's a fellow out of West Allis WS with a last name of Allen (hope I got that right)
that's also well worth the listen. Very much in the Elvin Jones mold, and well worth the listen.
Drummers tend to pick each other's style and performance apart more than any other instrument. I know lots of players, and virtually everyone of them will go right along with what I wrote. You gotta hear them play live in a small venue. But myself I'm more into upright bass players than anything else.

Oh, no, I meant the whole darn post."I might add here that there's a fellow out of West Allis WS with a last name of Allen (hope I got that right)"
You probably mean Carl Allen. Yes, he's a nice player. I'm well aware of him, thank you, and many, many others. But I'm not here to write lists of every jazz drummer I ever thought was worth checking out. There's no way I could even try to make a list of all the guys I've ever heard, even if I just limited it to live performances. There are just too many.
Have a nice week.

I knew that would be a loosing bet right off the bat!
