Bruno Walter wrote an essay about the two that started out something like this: they both wrote 9 symphonies numbered 1 through 9, and the symphonies were each long. That is the end of the similarities between the two.
Follow Ups:
There ARE a lot of reasons to relate the two. These include their teutonic roots, similar scale of conception and use of orchestral forces, heavy emphasis on brass fanfares and dynamic contrast. Then there is the even LESS tangeible element (compared to these OTHER intangible elements!:-) of "the epic journey". Mahler and Bruckner share a unique ability to creat symphonic monoliths -- self contained universes -- that, truly, just don't sound like anyone else, by and large. Anyway, I think that's what folks are getting at when the two are mentioned together.

A lot of musicians are required for each composers' symphonies, but that can be said of most composers of their era.
Bruckner calls for standard string, wind and brass parts, and just increases the number. Mahler on the other hand calls for lots of irregularly used instruments, has instruments played in usual ways, and uses a greatly expanded percussion section -- Bruckner never even used a bass drum. Bruckner is a lot closer to Brahms in this area.
heavy emphasis on brass fanfares
So did a lot of people.
dynamic contrast
Yes, that's what folks are doing when they point to the "similarities". All I was doing was citing the categorical reasons I believe they think they are similar in people's eyes."A lot of musicians are required for each composers' symphonies, but that can be said of most composers of their era." No shit, don't INSULT me!:-)
