Hi Arvind:Here are a few of the recording *imperfections* I hear in two tracks of the Red Wine Trio cd:
Track 1:
0:16 static
0:27 pop
0:33 pop
0:44 pop
0:50 static
1:35 pop
1:58 pop
2:44 static during bass soloTrack 3:
Really obvious problems with static from 0:05 - 0:18. Sounds to me like they had a bad mic cable. It's the same sound you hear in track one, just more obvious.Give the cd a spin and see what you think. I'm interested in your results.
As for highly regarded albums/labels, which genre do you like?

...and did hear those artifacts. I am passing the message along to Pierre to see what his explaination is. However I feel that, while true, this is losing the forest from the trees.
Oranda,
Thanks, I hope to check that out in the next few days. I can find something to like in almost every genre; jazz, blues, world and classical probably stand out the most.
It can be hard to separate great performances from great recordings, but here is a short list attempting to be as objective as possible and not simply name my favorites:Jazz- Shirley Horn's You Won't Forget Me
World- Bakithi Kumalo's San Bonan (also a rare HDCD title)
Classical- I have never played classical nor am I a huge fan, but Bach's 6 Suites for Solo Cello as played by Pierre Fournier (Polygram records) is nothing short of brilliant. There are a few different versions of the cello suites and while Bach fans all have their favorite, Fournier's rendition is (to me) the gold standard. The performance is flawless and the recording is superb. The cello is warm and woody yet not bloated and transient attacks are preserved in the recording. Hard not to recommend this one.
Lastly, Stereophile CDs are masterfully recorded. Very dynamic and *live* sounding. They record some of their own, but also feature cuts from quality labels (like Chesky and Reference Recordings.) Excellent liner notes and test tones to boot.
