thanks for the tip; I've actually found great sounding cd's (obviously from great sounding original master tapes) from many a older disc.
I've got the cd 'the best of Ella' and the track 'midnight Sun' sounds incredible. Of course the technique is quite basic compared to today's wizardy but I can never get enough of the track.Sometimes I actually prefer a basic mic setup from the old school jazz era; got a Gil Evans cd where it's obviously a two mic setup in a jazz club, lots of background noises of glsses tinkling, voices, etc., not as refined as some of today's 'high res' efforts; but enormously enjoyable nonetheless!

Follow Ups:
that should've read 'Bill Evans' not Gil..The complete Village Vanguard recordings 1961(3 cd set)
Very raw, unpolished, but authentic!

No prob. GIL Evans made lots of great albums, too, some with Miles Davis. There is an album called "Out of the Cool". A studio recording, the vinyl version had a map of where the instruments were in the studio and the make and model of the microphones used on the instruments. Them wuz the daze.

For example the early Beatles albums I have in mono are better sounding than many of their later stereo recordings. Much more "you are there" presence.
Awright, awready. Forget the frigging CD junk and buy yourself the two LP 45 RPM set of "Art Pepper +11". (I have ALL the CD versions including Mobile Fidelity.....pfffft) Play "Groovin' High". Yes, it's old bbop from 1959 with the stereo sound of folks IN THE ROOM. Just heard it on SoundLabs A-1 driven by Ayre MX-R fed by a hot-damn VPI set-up. THIS is a good recording.Want a good sounding CD? (of COURSE, you do) Go to http://homerecords.be/ and buy aNoo doing "luckless lands of the North". Suaznne Vega meets Ricky Lee Jones with some euro-hipsters,
I'm done.
Be-Bop and Mahler
"Want a good sounding CD? (of COURSE, you do)"Sure, a disc that sounds nice is always nicer, but I would rather have 1 disc full of music I liked no matter what it sounded like than 20 that sounded great but did not engage me musically. When I sit and listen to stuff I pick what I want to hear, not what sounds best.
I am not saying you suggested this, but far too many "audiophiles" are more worried about how their stereo sounds, and to that end listen to nothing but stuff that re-inforces how it sounds. (even if it's lifeless)
To a degree I was guilty myself in what I suggested to GL, however I only did so because I happened to recently buy the album and not because it was recorded well but because I liked what I heard from it. That it sounded good as well is just a bonus I discovered upon getting it and upon reading his post thought he might like it.
Want to take a test? Go here and spend a whole $7.99 on the Capstan Shafts album Euridice Proudhon. It is the most deliberately poorly recorded train wreck of an album I ever heard and it's a joy to listen to. It's so "wrong" in so many ways I can't even begin to describe it. (bizarre miking, over modulation, songs starting apparently some time into the track already...) Yet it is quintessential pop. I would be really curious to hear what people in this "realm" thought of it. It breaks every rule of audio, but adheres to every rule of pop. Which does matter most?
If you aren't brave and need a clip first, you can hear one here.
Absolutely agree. Out of the 3000 or so CD/LPs I have, there are maybe half a dozen that are poor musically, but good sonically. I rarely play them. The two albums I recommended are music I really like. Sorry I didn't make that clear. Guess I assumed most people buy music they like and if it sounds good to boot, viOla.
I'm a jazz and classical snob, so almost all pop doesn't do it for me. That's good because I don't have to buy as many albums and bad, because I can't interact musically with most folks.

That you're anywhere and you hear the Archies "Sugar Sugar" and you don't sing along? Hum? You turn it off if you can?You poor bastard.... :^ )
No, lucky bastard.
Wow, it's like that old movie with Donald Sutherland, what was that called..... oh yeah, Invasion Of The Body Snatchers.
No human being could not like that song.
Creepy :^ )
Oh, you mean the NEWER "Invasion of the Body Snatchers".It's O.K. If I don't know the song, I can't not like it, or something to that effect.
BTW, what's this stuff about "human being"? Boy, is that a weird phrase or what?
