Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
71.7.187.134
I am hearing a sort of tizzy artifact from one of my speakers. It's not quite a rattle, but sort of a low level sizzle. It is more obvious at low levels than at high volumes. This speaker also sounds somewhat brighter than the other. The problem follows the speaker if I swap channels. Is this a precursor to ribbon failure? Are there things to check with repect to the appearance of the ribbon or its connections? Can tension be adjusted? If ribbons have to be replaced will Magnepan ship the entire cartridge to Canada or will I be forced to buy the kit and struggle with getting it right which has been an ordeal for some here?
Follow Ups:
I had an intermittent buzz from one of my ribbons (3.6's) I replaced the tweeter, but it still ocured randomly. So I swapped the x-over boxes and the distortion moved with the box. I sent the box to magnepan and they repaired it at n/c.About 6 months ago a friend gave me a set of MIT Music Hose 750 Jumpers, which I am using inplace of the stock metal jumpers on the xover. After installing the MIT's the distortion was back. So I opened up the xover box and tightened down the posts. So far so good.
When I get the extra cash, I plan on getting MIT AVT1 bi-wire cables, then the MIT 750s can run between the x-over and the speaker where they belong.
Hope this helps
Start by swapping out the fuse, even if it looks OK...
Jerry
I have bypassed the fuses some time ago. This problem was there before and after that however.
