Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
206.190.70.135
I recently got some 3.3s with a 3.5 crossover. I read that the values are slightly different as I recall, but I suspect not enough to mess up the sound. Does anyone know whether I am losing something near the bass by not having the original 3.3 crossovers? Am I gaining something?
Maybe the 3.5s used better components?
They sound great; though I'm not sure about the bass yet compared to the 1.6s. I cannot go back to my 1.6s I think after hearing them but I will have to when I send the 3.3s to Magnepan for re-glue, etc. At least one woofer and one midrange has a buzz at certain frequency (but not on most music).
Follow Ups:
Well according to the spec section on this site the big difference between the 3.3s and 3.5s is that the 3.3s have the magnets in the front versus the 3.5s that don't. This could explain the crossover difference do to the different design of the speaker. Not sure which one sounds better or worse though you could turn your speakers around and hook them up in reverse to see if there is a difference.
The difference between the 3.3 xo and the 3.5 xo is the change from a 225 mfd cap to a 275 mfd cap in the external low pass filter. The graphic analysis shows a small (~2db) hump around 150 Hz with the 3.5's. Probably not noticeable.
Before you send your speakers back to Magnepan you might want to look at Peter Gunn's article on using DAP to repair the delaminations. With the money saved you can follow AndyR's suggestion and buy an active crossover. Then all you need is another amp, two more pairs of IC's and another pair of speaker cables, another shelf for the amp,... No wonder they call this the asylum.
I may be an egoist but at least I don't talk about other people.
I did look at the article. I would need a good staple gun and I believe that he only repaired the edges. My delamination if that's what it is is in the middle not edges, plus if the glue ages then I figure spot repairs won't help much if the other areas start to go. Magnepan will strip and rewire the whole thing. I am not sure of the condition of the ribbons either. And I think for less than what I paid for my 1.6s I will have much better speakers overall (but I'm not sure whether the bass is as good on the 3.3s. I don't hear a big difference between the 1.6 and 3.3 as far as the sound seeming to come from one driver. The 3.3s seem more dynamic also.
Magnepan did say that they would not put different crossover components in if I supplied them but that they would not touch them if they were already upgraded and I asked them to leave as is.
But I can say that these do require significantly more power than the 1.6s as now my amp (300W into 4 Ohms) runs very hot when turned up a little loud. Then I have to decide whether I want to use the IIbs or 1.6s for rears. I like the II bs kind of better than the 1.6s although they don't go as loud I think (they need repair too). The II B s make much better rear speakers than MMGs.
I had IIB's prior to getting my IIIa's and I felt that the IIb's had a more solid bass. They do have have a rolled off treble (around 16 kH)but integrate well. I am not into HT (the only thing I watch regularly on TV is NASCAR and lately reruns of "Scrubs" and rarely watch a DVD), but suspect the treble limitation on the rear speakers would not be an issue.

Hi sbrians,AFAIK (having been sent schematics from the factory in the early 90s), there is little difference between the 3.3 and the 3.5 except for a minor change in the external XO. The drivers are the same.
I'll bet my bottom dollar the 3.5 certainly didn't use anything but the same old "el cheapo" Magnepan components but you are certainly not "missing anything" in terms of using a 3.5 external XO with the 3.3. Though whether you're actually gaining something is hard to say ... but presumably the Magnepan engineers thought so, or they wouldn't have bothered to make the change?
If you're worried about the 3.3 bass, I suggest you shouldn't waste your money redoing the external XO with better inductors etc. ... sell it on eBay and put in an active XO! :-)) The bass panel responds well to not having those big inductors "in the way" of the signal.
