Hi,
I looked and there is no fuses anywhere on the back of the speakers. These are the mg-II and not the later MG-IIc series, I don't think these used fuses unless they are internally mounted and I have no access from the outside. I see two binding post speaker terminals in each that's it. Any other suggestions?
I just checked the MG-IIa schematic from the tweaks page. According to the schematic, they use fuses.
Thanks, I will try that right now and get back on my findings in a few...Best regards!!
The earliest version of the MG 11 had no fuse. Look for my response to you question on the speaker forum.Contact Magnapan if you need a repair kit.
You are right. I just removed the speaker post and found no fuses anywhere. I just fired them up again and did an A/B comparison to give you guys a better idea of how these sound. I connected Tannoy Stirling on one side and a Magnepan on the other. I turned the treble all the way down on the preamp for the Tannoy and the treble all the way for the Maggie, the result was about the same on the top end response for both speakers playing at the same time. Don't get me wrong, I do get midrange and bass but very little if any tweeter sound. I don't know if this is normal or not. Here is some of the vintage speakers in my Arsenal, maybe I'm a sucker for their top end and expected the same out of the Maggies; Yamaha NS-1000M's, Tannoy Stirlings, Spendor BC1's, Celestion SL-600's, JBL 4425's, ESS AMT 1D's, and the list goes on and on. This is the first time for me playing with Magnepans and the top end or little to no top end was the first thing I noticed. I hope I cleared a few things up on this posting. Thank you guys again for your response!!!!
A properly working MG-II should have similar treble character to the Celestion SL600. I know this because I used to own both the MG-II and the SL6 that used the same copper tweeter as the SL600. Both speakers were on the darker side of neutral. It's possible the MG-II's tweeter has gone bad, especially if exposed to ultraviolet light for a long time.
I think this answers my question. I like the top end on the Sl-600's, and the Maggies are not anywhere near the Celestions in that aspect. Looks like a tweeter kit is defenitely the way to go. Thanks again for the advice.
