Just got a sweet deal off eBay, a 5-channel Chiro c500 amp for my 2.7's. I'd been limping along, gradually getting back into higher-end stuff after getting tired of it and downgrading. Been living with a pair of Adcom amps (the 4-channel was harsh, but the little 5200 wasn't bad). Getting the 5-channel so I can bi-amp the 2.7's.Not interested in mega-buck amps, been there, done that. But did want something with good sound and value. I'd heard that the Chiro amps were similar to Rotel, maybe just a hair better, seem to be well liked. Looking forward to finally getting an adequate amount of power in the Maggies.

Congrats...not familiar w/ the amp, but it's always nice to get more power when you need it.Jon
Yeah, it's a rare piece, but well reviewed. Haven't heard it in person, but if it's as good as Rotel (they say it's slightly better), then that's all I really need. It's 125x5 @8 ohms, so I'll be putting 125x2 into each speaker. Should be plenty of power.
Not a fan of Rotel (or the Rotel sound) myself, but that doesn't mean anything other than my own opinion.Something you may not know...Very common, even in mid-hi-fi amps is that they will run at 125 watts to 2 channels w/ an 8 ohm load...add you using 4 of the channels you'll be lucky to get 90-95 watts per channel (something to think about) + the 4 ohm load could make things even worse, well harder on your amp and in return your Maggies.
Don't want to rain on your parade. From what I gather, you've had some hi fi components in the past, so you know the unfortunate sh** that comes up when buying a new piece of equipment.
Good luck to ya...hope it works out better than what I just said...otherwise, sell that amp and get a 2 channel amp (SS or tube) whatever fits your bill the best.
Take care,
Jon
Hi Jon,Please lose the sig line ("shameless plug for my website: www.jdlkaudiomusic.com") that links to what we presume is a site that is designed to sell a product (your songs). You may wish to revisit the rules if you have any questions. Thanks.

Hey jjcarr, I found your amp.Kinergetics Chiro C-500 High Current 5 Channel Amplifier
Power Output 140 watts per channel at 8 ohms, all channels driven.
280 watts per channel at 4 ohms, 3 channels driven.
THD 0.03% (20Hz-20KHz)
Input Impedance 25 Kohms
Full Power Bandwidth 20Hz-20 kHz (+- 3dB)
Weight 48 lbsI'don't think this amp will have a problen driving your 2.7's. Just don't drop it on your foot. You'll have a limp for life, hehe.
Yup, that's the one. I'll only be using 4 channels, 2 for each speaker. Should be ample power, can't wait to get it.
This one claims a full 125x5 @8ohms, but as you say, it's a risk. It's also supposed to be 2-ohm stable. It's a pretty big 50lb unit, originally retailed around $2k. Couldn't say no for $450 delivered. It's definitely not a 2-channel Pass Labs, but it costs a fraction of that and should (should) get pretty close sound-wise.I've become a fan of bi-amping, my 2.7's are even setup to be tri-amped if I want. Ideally I'd like 4-6 mono Icepower amps, but I'm just not motivated to spend that much $$$ on the system. So lately I'm out of the 2-channel amp market. I'm sure I'll gradually wander back into high-end stuff again and probably get a full Meridian or Arcam stack.
Understand your Rotel comment. I find them to be a tad bright, but some of their newer stuff is pretty good. Reviews say this amp is sweeter sounding than the Rotel stuff, which is the direction that I want to go. I use Rotel as a benchmark because it represents good value for the money.
I may be bi-amping my new (soon to arrive) Rogue Audio Zeus w/ my 150's (by Rogue), though I'd be very surprised if that was needed, even for concert level volumes, which I tend to strive for.To keep it short, I kinda measure the watts and the weight to get an idea of the amp. About 1/2lb per watt seems to work out nicely, but it all depends on the amp. of course.

Is it just me, or does it seem like the bigger the SS amp is the hotter it runs as well. Anything 2-channel and over 75lbs will just about heat the room...:)
Warning: Generalization. I've found that the hotter a SS amp runs, regardless of power, the better it sounds.
Be-Bop and Mahler
Yup, I'm using a pair of Adcom amps right now, a 4-channel and 2-channel. The 4-channel runs cold and sounds like crap. The 2-channel gets too hot to touch and sounds a lot better.
