Have had the MMGs for about 6 months - bypassed the tweeter attenuator after a week or so, and spent mucho time playing with positioning, which is equal parts fun and frustrating. Have posted a few times asking for crossover upgrading advice, as that seemed like a natural and relatively inexpensive tweak. However, have also been finding that cds - specifically older cds - ie those that were originally released on vinyl - have been sounding a wee bit strident, and often fatiguing to listen to. So, one eveing when the spouse was out, I decided to try the Magnepan supplied resistors across the tweeter.
WOW! Sounded bloody fantastic - cleaned up everything, improved the bass, brought the midrange into focus, seemed to improve the "airiness " of the treble. I spent at least 2 hours swapping the resistor in and out with both vinyl and cd for testing, and finally decided to try it out for a couple of weeks.
2 weeks later, it still sounds great. I also think that I have found the right position for them, 'cos whatever music I play, sounds just right.
Anyhow, I am posting this as I don't believe I have encountered anyone else on this forum who has either tried or recommended adding the resistor across the tweeter. I was very dismissive of doing so - until I tried it - as it seemed counter-intuitive to providing Maggie magic. But - in my room, with my system - it has been brilliant.

You may have a room with too much reflection such that reducing the tweeter output restores the balance. If you like the stock resistors, wait until you hear some good ones! My favorites are Caddock power film resistors in flat packages. You have to mount them on heat sinks, and damp the heat sinks against acoustic vibration.OTOH, you may have RF noise entering your system through the speakers. Magnepans make good antennas, and adding the resistors may provide enough inductance to reduce the RF noise level. In this case, you could replace the resistors with RF chokes, such as the JW Miller 5522, and get even more benefit.
All this can be done without modifying the speakers, and you can always put the original resistors back to obtain your baseline performance level.
Al,
I would like to try the RF chokers in my 3.6R. Could you please tell me where I can get JW Miller 5522.
Sorry that I can't direct you to a stocking distributor. All the distributors I know of show it as a non-stocked item, with a large minimum order.

Sent you e-mail.
I restored a pair of 1.5s and found them wonderful but slightly bright. Added the one ohm resistors from Maggie and voila! Perfect. I marvel daily at how good they sound.
them, too, with my MMGs before I had my then listening room carpeted. After laying the carpet, the sound was a bit dull and lifeless. Removing the resistors restored the proper balance.
