I made my own powersupply and manual softstart circuit with UcD 400's. My powersupply was overbuilt (1450VA toroid with 80K in filter capacitors) and my case was unnecessary(aluminum-lined marble). If I were to just go with the kit, it would be prety easy. Then you can start tweaking (there are capacitors in amplifiers too... if you think crossover caps in Maggies are cheap, look in your amp/preamp/active crossover and start counting all the cheap electrolytics in the signal chain- even on expensive components). The basic UcD amplifier design is elegantly simple, which makes it great for tweaking.
Love the sound. Load/frequency independant low distortion sound (stable to less than 1 ohm).

how much was the kit?

very nice kits here
I didn't buy a kit, really...I bought the amplifier modules from Hypex
http://www.hypex.nl/
https://www.hypexshop.com/They sell direct to the US- you just have to convert from Euros- I think the total was ~$300
However, they also sell matching power supplies/transformers/softstarts... ~$500 Euros for a stereo UcD 400 which I think is about $650 currently.
IMHO, the UcD 400 (conservatively rated at 400w into 4 ohms- per unit) is more than adequate for smaller Maggies, and the UcD 180 will probably be enough for most people. If you build a strong enough powersupply, you could biamp each speaker with UcD 400 modules for less than using one UcD 700 per channel.
I built mine using surplus transformers from PS Audio, Sprague Powerlytic powersupply caps from an industrial surplus auction, some parts I had laying around, and a few bits and pieces from Parts Express....
