Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

This was a modification kit for Quad 57s that was sold be a company called Linear Acoustics Labs. There were a number of claims for this modification including extending the high-end response and bass accuracy of the old Quad. I remember reading a review of this in Stereophile many years ago and it was very enthusiastic about the improvements it made to the Quad.
Follow Ups:
A friend of mine acquired those mods in the past and asked me to install
them in his 57-s. The next day they they arrived back with a frantic request to uninstall them because the speakers now sounded awful. If memory serves the mod required re-assignment the treble panel mid- and treble strip connections.
I think Peter Walker knew it better, so it should be left alone. I do not recommend installing them now.
I have a pair of these mods but I have never installed them. Following your advice, I don't think I will bother. Thanks again.
I own a pair of the Linear Acoustics Labs modules you speak of. I have tried them in my own as well as a couple of customers' original Quads. Summary: those passive devices substantially reduce the overall sensitivity of the speaker (bad), overemphasize the midrange frequencies (bad), but tighten up the midbass (good). IMO, that's too much of a sacrifice to get a little better bowed bass...Sandro
Lots of mods have been done to the ESL over the years. In my experience all of them are questionable at best. Most of them significantly degrade the performance of the speaker in one way or another. The best mod one can do for their ESLs is to make sure they are working to original factory spec., correctly set-up, and driven with sufficient amplification. Not much else one can do to improve on the genuis of Peter Walker.
