Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
74.36.32.39
So I got excited about updating the components in the XO's, stripped out the factory components and forgot to mark the speaker spade lugs to the high and mid/bass ribbon panels with the + and - for each panel. Can anyone help me get these marked correctly? Phil

these work pretty good. i think you can get them at parts express.
P,I did the same thing. Maybe someone will come along and help, but even then, the mirror image nature of things may not really help.
I do mine by ear using some phase testones, like the one on the XLO disc.
with a simple 1.5v D-cell battery. Touch one lead to the - on the battery, then, watching the cone (diaphragm) touch the other to the + on the battery. If said cone (diaphragm) moves forward (out) You have the + and - correct. If it moves in (back) you have them reversed.

Yeah, I have done that too, and it is a good idea. I have never tried it on my maggies, and while I certainly don't think it would do any harm, I am hesitant to post something I haven't actually tried. If you have tried it on maggie, let us know. That would be a better way perhaps.
The up side of doing it with the tones, is that you can hear what it does to the sound.
I found this invaluable when I when to a friends house, and and on his non maggie system things just didn't sound right. My ears told me that something was out of phase. Sure enough the ears were right. He had listened that way for years!!!! and although the colors were all right, something was out of phase. He wouldn't believe me, and we ran one of his phase disks, and sure enough he heard it. Then he swapped one of his speaker cables, and it was much better.
The other time I have found this approach beneficial is when setting up subs and maggies. But i suppose if a sub has high level inputs, the battery method works too.
Maybe you could write it up with some picts and have mart put it in the tweaks section for newbies to use?
"cone" speakers. Wow. I bet he could not believe the bass improvement when you switched that speaker cable. With one channel out of phase, massive bass cancellation is inevitable.

Yeah, I wasn't familiar with the bass of his system and since it wan't a maggie system, I just thought that was kind of what it was like. The tip off was the imaging....
