Are you in the same listening room. If it was ten years ago that you were using the ET's... perhaps a room change is the reason you are not pleased with the sound. The ET's are a good speaker at the price.
I have to wonder how much you plan to spend for the Dunlavy's ... if it is in the same price range, then I understand. However it seems the Dunlavy comparison is not a fair one by price.
Follow Ups:
I replaced my 4A's with 8A's; hope he's got the 5's coming in, it's the only way I can see an (overall)improvement, otherwise it's a subjective move at best
I would say it is more of a subjective move. The way my room is set up and the way that I move around while listening alot of times probably makes a difference. You deffinetly have to sit in the sweet spot to get the best sound out of the LFT 8's. The last few sets of speakers that I have had have been dynamics, maybe I've just gotten used to that type.
Yes, moving around while listening the the ET 8A's is not the best way to enjoy them, where as the Dunlavys would be less critical given this type of scenario.I agree with your assessment about the "sweet spot", but that can be somewhat over come if you have the room to spread out the speakers, they need space to do their thing, also a British reviewer once suggested removing the top wooden frame caps for better height extension, which I did and definitely helped.
Where as, when I had my Dunlays set up, literally in a room a little bigger than a shoebox, they sounded better than I would have expected...and obviously even better with proper spacing in a larger room which I eventually got them to.But in terms of mid-range presentation(e.g., 180 to 10KHz panels) the ET had it hands down(i.e., no boxes to get in the way, and single panel seamless integration that cannot be bettered).
As for dynamics, the Dunlavy 4As and up(the line) would have the ETs for lunch, no match for the ScanSpeak woofer(carbon/fiber) compared to the air suspension paper cones of the 8's(though they do have an impressively low Q for being sealed in a small box, that goes lower than they have a right to). That is why I suggested it would take the 5's to better what the 8's do, but only in an overall presentation.
Any yes, if you are a fan of dynamic box speakers, I can understand why you might select the Dunlay's, they excel at pinpoint imaging & dynamics(as good as any point source mini monitors I've ever heard).
Finally, do you think you have given the 8's enough time to fully break in? The woofers do need time to catch up with the rest of the speak; it's probably the number one reason most end up for sale on the used market, other than improper amplification, but I see you have that covered quite nicely. In any event, good luck and I hope you get to what makes you happiest and what fits your needs the most.
