I think I would like to try an external or crossover upgrade, Ive been in tweaks and left confused, Im not interested in Bi-amp, just skipping the stock crossover, any agreement in the group as to which to use?
Follow Ups:
I'd undo the socks from the bottom and locate the four 'tabs' in front where the drivers and cross-overs meet. I'd remove the spades and replace them with spades of my own already connceted to the new cross-over components. This ensures the integrity of stock components if you wish to go back to the original wiring (giving the option of stock vs upgraded if selling). Not cutting involved whatsoever to the original fabric or component's.

makes sense to me, and by the way, thanks for the very easy to follow color coded schematic in tweaks.
wired as (+)(-)(-)(+), (-)(+)(+)(-); good luck!

does the facrory color code this correctly? or is it a matter of users just matching connections based on position.
on each wire and supports it. Just remember to tag each lead corresponding with the leads you remove.

This is excellent advice GL.EVERYONE makes this mistake, even knowing that they are mirror imaged, it still happens.
I have got into the habit of figuring it out by ear, using phase test tones.
Good luck getting any consensus on any forum in the asylum. The simplest is to use the stock crossovers as a guide, duplicating them with better components.
Ed HSU's write up in tweaks is probably a good starting point for substitution using Hovland or jensen caps. Paco uses the Ansars. For inductors, it is easier, some use alphacore or sledgehammers. You could get wrapped up into inaction by stressing over which is best. DO NOT DO THIS.
Pick something in your budget for the values you need, and rest assured that what ever you pick will be better than stock, and will improve things dramatically.
As for bi amping, don't dismiss this as you can do 2 esternal crossover boxes, and just jumper them like most speakers out there. If I learned anything from modding the crosses, its that they make a huge impact on the sound, and getting rid of the passive components is probably the best thing one can do. But that is a whole noter can of worms.
point well taken, so if i go to the stock diagram and replace whats there and use silver to tie it all together, I should here an improvment, i guess the group can agree on that much?
YES. This is a very good plan. You will not go wrong here IMHO.
Which essentially read......"You came here for help? Good luck."The best reply I've seen in ages. LOL
Perhaps he should put all his cap choices on one wheel, his inductors on another, wait till his bio-rhythm is at it's peak, and then spin each one and buy what it says.
Say, that's not a bad idea....
Yeah, I guess that is what I was saying. But seriously PG, you think the forum could agree on a cap choice for him???
Maybe a better chance for world peace, or electric cars?
I was going to suggest Jensens and alphacores, but hell, I did the capless one, so what do I know about caps, except that there is agreement that Solens Winey uses are not really a good choice (if one doesn't take prices into account).
Now, the alpha core I did use on both the bass and tweets, so I do recommend them, but like most people, no other combinations were tried (except stock) so who knows.
No need to get fancy, just write options on a dart board, close the eyes and let it rip.
By the way, you MUST have a recommendation for this poster, so what do you say?
"But seriously PG, you think the forum could agree on a cap choice for him???"No.
This forum can't agree on tipped or straight, raised or floored, normal or turned, tube or SS, wall or ceiling or floor or audio pit etc... We can't even come to a reasonable concensus on declawing cats.
"Maybe a better chance for world peace, or electric cars?"
World peace? Not in our lifetimes
Electric cars? Probably.
"By the way, you MUST have a recommendation for this poster, so what do you say?"
I didn't try what I'm doing yet to the 1.6, so I don't know if it will even work. (it will be a shared series XO like the smga uses) By next weekend I should know how it sounds.
However, even then that's top secret info 2 years in the making. I'll be happy to help anybody with any step in wooden construction, but I'm not giving my XO design up. I will agree he should use a 12 gauge jantzen or alpha core inductor however, how's that? :^ )
Tipped, tubed, turned in, tweeters out, NO cats!
: )

Simple way to start doing tweaks would be 2.5db midboost XO-tweak (http://members.aceweb.com/edgrochowski/article1.htm), since it doesn't require to internal changes at all. I just ordered required components and haven't tried it yet.Of course you can probably get much more with true upgrades.
