Some of the associated equipment has changed since this was taken.I listen mostly to ripped CDs via iTunes, M-Audio Audiophile USB sound card, and a modified Assemblage DAC 1.5. See my latest configuration as the link following my signature.

First of all, I'm curious about which model Marantz receiver you have in that picture. It looks very similar to my old 2238B, but it has a few too many buttons. I bought my 2238B in 1977 - the first *real* piece of equipment I ever bought new and I still have it. I service it about every five years and it still works great - except for the fuse lamps, it still has all of its original parts too. It's at my repair shop where it keeps me entertained daily (driving an old pair of Ohm L loudspeakers - purchased concurrently (My parents had a fit!)). So, what model is yours?I'm also curious about your M-Audio device. I need to buy my daughter a better sound device for her computer - something that supports MIDI (for her Yamaha synthesizer) and also provides for MIC inputs (for her Yamaha piano among other things) would be nice. How would rate the sound quality of that device (obviously you like it since you're using it in an awesome system, but you're apparently using its digital output and a different DAC with that system)?
Okay, one more - isn't that an Adcom GFP 750 I see in the photo? I don't see it listed in your new system spec. Where did it go? If memory serves, that's a Nelson Pass design and follows Hippocrates' motto about doing no harm - in passive mode, it has NO sonic signature (a very good thing)...just curious.
First, the Marantz you see is a 2252B which I briefly owned but sold because I could rarely be bothered to hooked it up.As for the M-Audio Audiophile USB, I'm not "golden ear" but I would say the sound is quite good. The modified Assemblage DAC 1.5 I'm now using is just slightly more transparent. The Audiophile USB doesn't have MIC inputs, that is, you will need a MIC preamp to interface with it. It does support MIDI devices, though I don't use any myself.
That is indeed an Adcom GPF-750 that you see in the picture. It is very nice in passive mode, (though some people, AbeCollins for one, say it's dull -- this might be a bad speaker/cable mismatch). However I sold mine for the Sonic Frontiers mainly because my Monarchy amps prefer true balanced input whereas the Adcom isn't true balanced in passive mode unless your inputs happen to be true balanced. (I also wanted try a tube preamp which I'd never done before.)

I understand about having too much gear. I've kept my old Marantz for sentimental reasons as much as anything. In any case, it works well enough for its application. Other things have come and gone; still others are stored away.I knew that particular model didn't have MIC inputs, but they have others that do. What I was interested in knowing was how it sounded. There does tend to be a family sound after all. It's good to hear that it's not too bad compared to a much more expensive DAC.
Hey, I'll certainly never criticize the Sonic Frontiers - read much in its favor though I've never had the pleasure of auditioning one.
Thanks again, and enjoy your very fine system.
