Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
208.107.78.105
My left speaker is exhibiting a buzzing, "ringing" sound at certain frequencies- esp. piano, female vocals and the like. I've narrowed it down to the midrange section. I did bypass my fuses on the mids, hearing that "those things are bulletproof!" in so many words, but now I'm beginning to wonder. Could it be possible that the "coil" wire overheated and melted a little bit of the mylar, and that's why it's humming? I have blown a couple of fuses in the past on the mid panels, but never on the ribbons. I must have been listening just a little too loud, for a little too long one night. I have plenty of power and current pushing the Maggies, and the amp does not clip. I would think that if I "blew out" the mid, it would not work at all, not being able to conduct and just an open circuit rather than being "half blown." I have tested the impedance, and it's the same as the other side. Any ideas before I rip into her?
Follow Ups:
look real close at the ribbon too. if it comes loose at a glue joint, it can rub the magnets. if you gently blow on it you can see if each glue joint is still intact.

i doubt it melted anything. it probably just came loose. on the midrange it may me hard to see. it's probably best to strip the whole thing and reglue it. alex has a good article on doing this using a 12v power supply to hold down the wires. i would recommend doing half at a time so you don't end up with a big tangle of wires though. if you don't have any miloxane i've used a water based contact cement like 3m fastbond 30nf in a pinch. it performs about the same but i think miloxane has a uv inhibitor.
