Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

I can buy a pair of MG .5 Q/R for $395, or a pair of MG-2b rebuilt for $395 or a pair of MG 1.4 for $425 for my brother in law. Which one should I get? Sound quality is the concern here. I am leaning toward MG 1.4. He is a newbie in Maggies. I would like to introduce him to the wonders of planar. If he upgrades later, I would like to use these speakers as rear speakers for surround system with 3.6qr in the front. Any advice especially from those owners who have heard all three pairs or just two of the three would be most appreciated.

Since you mentiond $425, spend the extra and get him new MMG's. Thi sway if he doesnt like em he can send em back, or he can keep them or he can upgrade. Buying used you will never know what your getting till the sock is off.
My friend Sam is thinking about letting his 1.6qr go for around$900 to $1000. It is in very good condition. I am leaning very much toward the 1.6qr. It sounds better than all the other speakers I mentioned, the .5qr, mg-2b, and the 1.4qr. I owned a 1.5qr before and were disappointed in the sound. The high was too pronounced while the mid and low were much weaker. I think 1.6qr would be the better choice although it is more money.

It depends on what sound you're looking for. The .5's have QR tweeters so their high end response is going to be more extended than the 1.4. The 1.4's produce deeper bass because they're larger. The .5's being a newer design, I would tend to think their sound is closer to the newer maggies particularly their successor, the MG12. I think I'd lean in that direction if it were me.
