Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
4.242.132.148
I happened to stop in at Goodwill today, and a pair of Maggies immediately got my attention. Paid for them and hauled them home. Both mid/bass panels work, but one rattles a little. Neither tweeter works. I pulled the grille on the one that rattles, and found that the tweeter wire is corroded away in several spots. The rattling is due to the mid/bass wires lifting a little at the ends. The mylar is in excellent shape.
Looks like I've got another project!
Any advice or input appreciated. I did a search and found some info.
I already know that Magnepan won't ship miloxane this time of year.
Follow Ups:
The MG-IIs are very competent speakers. Personally I like them far better than the MMGs. I have owned both.If it were me, I would try to restore them as close to original as I could. That would mean waiting till spring to get the whole kit from Magnepan.
I rebuilt a pair of tympani 1(U)s last winter. A pretty straightforward but labour intensive task.
Magnepans at GoodWill? Nice. Who would have ever thought. I find a lot of good records there for very reasonable prices.
IIAs would definitely be worth the time and money to get up and fully functional again. I wouldn't use miloxane anyway, looks like people have had much better sucess with DAP, and it should last longer. Get some tweeter repair kits, new fabric, fasten the loose ends down, take out the center trim (imo) and you'll have a pair of nice larger Maggies. Maybe they'll migrate to being your mains even?
My local Goodwill is usually pretty picked over as far as stereo equipment. This is the first time I've found anything good there, but my step son lucked out and got a decent Kenwood HT receiver...about 10 minutes after it was put out one morning. When the MGIIs are done it will be interesting to compare them to my MMGs.
When I asked my wife what she thought of them she said that I could install them in her sewing and craft room...LOL!
You can reglue the bass wires with Weldwood contact cement. Honestly, it works better than miloxane, once you get all the old miloxane off with acetone. I've used it myself. Check the Mug articles for Peter Gunn's repair post. Sounds like you'll need to repair the tweets with a repair kit from Magnepan.

I've read all the articles on rebuilding at least twice.I'll probably use the contact cement for the woofer panels since I have it on hand. I'm not sure about using it for the tweeter wires though. This will be a learning experience....
