I will be purchasing, at first, the MG12s (for L/R HT duty). I entend to get the CC3@2 (front center/back center) and the 1's (for L/R back).I'd like to consider the new Carver Sunfire multi-channel amp that has 400wpc@8ohms (doubled to 800wpc@4ohms) for this configuration.
I'd love to believe that this amp will do all that I hope it will, but...I'm slightly afraid of its power rating for the maggies in consideration. (The surround processor is the Anthem D1.)
Any suggestions?
Follow Ups:
I have a Sunfire driving QR1.6 fronts, a CC3 center, and a pair of MMG's in the back. I think you will need to be more concerned with blowing fuses on the maggies (or vaporizing the wires in them if you bypass the fuses) than running out of power. They are pretty amazing amps. Also, if the MG12's let you bi-wire, using the Sunfire current output to drive the tweeters and the voltage output to drive the bass panels is something you should at least try. My room is kinda bright, and that setup tames the highend just enough.
drmoore,It's my understanding that the 12s are not bi-wireable. Re: the fuses blowing...perhaps the other Sunfire amp at 200wpc(8ohms)/400wpc(4ohms) might be a better choice?
I have the 200/400 watt version and have never felt that I needed more, but maggies do love power. I would get the 400/800 watt version if you can swing it, and have been scanning Agon looking for one myself. I have only had one incident of blowing a fuse. I was playing GRP's Happy Birthday Charlie Brown CD when my two year old decided to "spin the pretty knob" on my preamp before I had a chance to stop her. Replaced the fuse and all is well, but I've always wondered if I would've smoked a 1.6 if I had done the fuse bypass mod.
drmoore,Thanks...I believe that the latest Sunfire iteration of the 400/800 will be reviewed in an upcoming issue of The Perfect Vision. They did indicate, in their current issue, that it is a very good unit...I believe the list price is $4,450.00 (or so).
Well, I just purchased the MG12's along with Grant's stands (stelth/strut). (Can't wait to start the "Maggie Journey.")
No problem as long as the amplifier doesn't clip which is highly unlikely. Maggies will suck up the power they need and just because an amplifier can deliver 10 megawatts of power doesn't meant that the speakers are getting 10 megawatts. Hell most of the time they just use 1or 2 watts. And if you use common sense (ie don't drive the speakers to ridiculous volumes like 120db) the speakers will be very happy with your Sunfires.
I may be an egoist but at least I don't talk about other people.
neolith,Thanks for your encouragement. I've read a short blurb in The Perfect Vision (which is to review this unit in an upcoming issue) that it appears to be a very good amplifier.
