I have an opportunity to buy a pair of 3.6's which I would drive with a REDGUM RGi120 integrated amp.Prior to making the 4+ hour drive out to listen to these I am curious if anyone has heard these paired together and if so what your thoughts are.
Follow Ups:
If you tell us what the rated power output of your Redgum amp is (into 8 ohms and into 4) instead of assuming we know all about the amp, we might be able to help you.Regards,
Sorry for neglecting including specifics of the amp in question. I was hoping that someone familiar with the pairing of the REDGUM with the Maggies would be able to comment on how they partner together from a synergistic perspective. I don't listen at very high SPL's so I believe the amp will have ample drive. Having said so, FTR, the amp is rated @ 155w/channel into 8 ohms although the final test report indicates 171.48w (both channels) continous RMS @ 8 ohms. I am unable to find any 4 ohm ratings though it's rated at > 150 amperes peak current if that's relavent.
Thanks, pneumonic,If you're new to Maggies, you probably haven't picked up on the concept that most Maggie owners get nice sound out of them ... but only some (10 or 20%) get the best sound out of them ... these owners typically have high power/high current amps (or run them active, as I do! :-)) ).
That being said, many people with IIIa/3.X Series 3-way Maggies are running them with an amp of your sort of power. If the Redgum (fine Aussie amp BTW! :-)) ) is 170w into 8 ohms and can produce very high peak currents, it probably has a good enough power supply to produce at least 300w into 4 ohms (which is close to what a 3.6 really is).
So I would think it should be fine. If not then you can either trade it for a higher-powered amp or replace the external passive XO with an active XO, use the Redgum on the bass panels and buy a nice 100wpc amp (into 8 ohms) for the mids/ribbons.
NB: this assumes the integrated amp has "preamp out" that can be used to feed the other power amp.3.6s are beautiful-sounding speakers with the right amps! :-))
Regards,
Thanks, Andy.I have never had Maggies (though I am a long time ML owner and love the planar sound) but have heard that the Maggies are very amp critical/dependant. Thus my enquiry asking if anyone has actually heard the REDGUM paired up with the Maggies and can comment on the synergy between them.
I have tried the REDGUM with my Logans and they drive them very well. I also heard that the REDGUM works beautifully with Ambience ribbon speakers so, when this opportunity presented itself that I could get my hands on a pair of 3.6's I was all ears.
