Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
24.113.9.6
Just looking for a bunch of opinions on interconnects. I need to buy several for my ht system to go between the Outlaw Audio 990 and amplifiers. The main speakers are 1.6QR's. I'm looking at Audio Art IC-1's and IC-3's. The IC-1's are OCC copper. The IC-3's have the addition of a silver coating on the copper strands and about double the price. What are you guys using for interconnects and do you have a strong opinion one way or another regarding silver or copper with Maggies? My amps to go with the 1.6QR's are a pair of old school classic Hafler SE 240's vertically bi-amped.

Take a look at the new Blue Jeans LC-1. You certainly can't beat the price. They sound great with my Magnepan 1.6. System is a Wright Sound WLA12A, Smart 2X150VT, and VTL ST-150.
audio being such a subjective medium I'm not so sure there's a cut and dry answer. In my own experience I made silver strand interconnects with Cardas Silver RCA's via John Risch as well. TO ME it sounds sweet and airy but IMO the trade off vs copper became some 'weight' lost in the lower registers. And as with any aspect of audio; your room plays just as much (if not all) a part of the overall presentation as well.

Can you audition these IC's at home? If so I would. I have a pretty good feeling you'll be happy w/ the copper. The few IC's I've checked out in my system usually sounded a lil more thin, though it will of course vary by brand. You'd think for paying maybe 2x as much as a copper cable that they just MUST sound better, but higher price doesn't always meen better.Audition!!!
copper vs. silver. My strong opinion is that, as with anything else in audio, the three most important factors are implementation, implementation, and implementation, along with a healthy dose of system synergy. After trying out a number of IC offerings from Cardas, Audioquest, Tara, Kimber, etc., as well as a tech-friend's cost-effective homebrew for my 1.6 system, I settled on Kimber Select copper-silver hybrids for my front-end-to-line-stage (CJ Premier 17LS) and line-stage-to-amp (CJ MF2500) links. But I'd hasten to add that that's what sounds right to my ears in this system in this room--with the music I listen to (mostly classical, jazz, film scores, and vocal standards). If it's feasible, your best bet is to audition at least a few cables from different manufacturers and with different internals on your main system, using familiar program material to see what works best with your Haflers and the rest of your system--and, of course, giving consideration to the budget you have to work with in view of your goal of wiring up your entire HT system.
FWIW.
With my current biamp setup with two turntables, one step-up transformer, a CDP and a CD Recorder, a tuner and a headphone amplifier, I use 10 pairs of IC's. Spending big bucks on IC's was not an option so I decided to use Jon Risch's IC's (Belden 89259 with Eichmann RCA's). I made some myself but found it almost as cheap to buy them from Heartland Cables at $55.00 a pair. Take a look at the Cable forum for reviews.
I may be an egoist but at least I don't talk about other people.
